DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nSustainable Design for Structural Engineers\nSESOC is excited to host their first webinar on Sustainable Design for Structural Engineers. \nNew Zealand’s net-zero-carbon legislation requires all industries to contribute to the carbon reduction journey and this is no different for the Construction and Structural Design industries.  The Building and Construction sector currently accounts for around 15% of New Zealand’s annual carbon emissions (MBIE\, 2021)\, and around half of this is through the materials used in buildings and infrastructure. \nSESOC is committed to supporting the shift towards net zero carbon construction\, and to that end\, are looking for ways we can support our members to engage\, understand\, and undertake embodied carbon assessments for their projects\, increasing the ‘carbon literacy’ of the industry (and clients) ahead of the expected mandatory reporting requirements from Central Government. \nWhen: Thursday 28th October at 5.30pm\nWhere: Online Via Zoom\nCost: Free | Register here \nTo Kick start our conversations on Sustainable design\, we welcome Will Arnold\, head of Climate Action for the Institution of Structural Engineers in the UK to share the journey that the UK has been on over the past few years. \nFrom within our own SESOC Sustainable Design Task Force\, Jared Keen and Nick Carmen will then share their presentations from the SESOC 2021 Conference focussing on how we as structural engineers can make a positive contribution through our projects. \nQ and A for the speakers will run after the presentations. \n\n\n\n\nWill Arnold\, Head of Climate Action\, the Institution of Structural Engineers \nWill leads the IStructE’s response to the climate emergency\, bringing sustainability action into all aspects of its work. He is responsible for driving change within the profession\, setting the minimum sustainability standards for institution members\, producing sustainability publications and training to support this\, and collaborating across the wider industry as it moves towards zero emissions. Previous to his work with the institution\, Will was a practising structural engineer at Arup for 10 years where he was responsible for key aspects of ambitious architectural projects across the world. \n  \nWill is chair of the Construction Industry Council’s 2050 Group\, and an active member of The Edge thinktank\, the UK Built Environment Advisory Group\, and the Engineering Advisory Group for The Structural Engineer magazine. He also sits on the judging panel for The Structural Awards. In 2021\, Will was presented with the President’s Award by the Institution\, in recognition of his work instigating change in the field of structural sustainability.\n\n\n\nEmbodied Carbon in Structural Design   \nNick Carman – Mott MacDonald NZ \n Based on some recent experiences and projects quantifying embodied carbon for buildings in Aotearoa-New Zealand\, the purpose of this presentation is to discuss the motivation behind studying embodied carbon\, fundamentals of LCA for buildings and typical results from recent studies\, from the viewpoint of an engineer entering into the world of LCA. \nA few key areas of uncertainty are discussed\, such as appropriate steelwork embodied carbon factors (ECFs)\, comparison between as-designed and as-constructed measures\, and whether the use of timber to decarbonise a project is a silver bullet. \n  \nNick Carman is a Technical Director within the Built Environment sector at Mott MacDonald\, with a strong focus on sustainability and  low-carbon design brought about by collaboration.  He has worked on projects throughout Australasia\, the UK\, the Middle-East and Canada\, but his favourite work remains that in his home of New Zealand.\n\n\n\nChallenges and Possible Solutions for Structural Engineers Seeking to Make a Positive Contributions to the Climate Emergency \nJared Keen – BECA \nAs the construction industry\, and the society within which we operate\, seeks mitigations to our present climate emergency\, structural engineers are seeking ways to transform from part of the problem\, to part of the solution.  In this presentation\, Jared examines the barriers that face practicing engineers in the meaningful implementation of low-carbon structures\, and how those barriers might be hurdled\, either by individual design teams\, or by the industry at large. \n  \nJared Keen is a Technical Director at Beca.  As a practicing structural engineer he has delivered major projects throughout New Zealand\, the United Kingdom and Europe.  He is the current IStructE New Zealand branch chair\, and an industry affiliate for QuakeCore.  He has a particular interest in sustainability and low damaged design and has delivered multiple timber projects in New Zealand\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:SESOC is pleased to invite you to attend Helen Trappitt’s presentation\, The Aftermath of Disaster in Christchurch – Repairing\, strengthening and creating new hope. \nTuesday 18th May 6pm: University of Auckland – Faculty of Engineering\, 1.401 \n  \nHelen originally shared this presentation as keynote speaker at the virtual ASEC conference last year\, and to an audience in Christchurch in March this year as part of the Engineering New Zealand Ten Years On Commemorations. \nHer abstract poses the argument that the most sustainable building is one that is able to be restored and repaired following a disaster. After the Canterbury earthquake sequence of 2010-11 many buildings in the Christchurch CBD were demolished\, often unnecessarily. The presentation will focus on the reinstatement of five buildings in Christchurch CBD (complete or ongoing) which cover a broad range of structural forms and construction. Ultimately almost 80% of the built environment in the city centre was lost. But there were many other ways that structural engineers brought life back to the city. Helen will also share her experience in the development of several large scale public artworks\, which helped to draw people back into the city centre once again. \nSESOC member Helen Trappitt is a structural engineer\, director and shareholder at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers based in Christchurch. She is on the Industry Advisory Board for the University of Canterbury Civil and Natural Resources Engineering department\, where she graduated with First Class Honours in 2000. Helen is a Director of Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited\, the joint venture company tasked with reinstating the city’s most significant icon. \nHelen specialises in the seismic strengthening of heritage buildings and has experience in this sector both before and after the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence.  She is also well respected for her expertise in helping to resolve complex residential insurance claims. \nHelen was awarded the Engineering New Zealand Canterbury Branch Award for Excellence in Service to the Community in 2018 for her pro bono work helping Gap Filler\, CoCA\, FESTA and SCAPE Public Art; and for her efforts in promoting engineering as a career at girls’ schools.  In 2019 Lewis Bradford was awarded two inaugural Engineering New Zealand ENVI awards for projects Helen steered. \nLewis Bradford has been responsible for the successful structural repair and strengthening of numerous important buildings in Christchurch. They were internationally recognised in 2019 with the IStructE award for structures in extreme conditions for the design of the new central library Turanga. \nIn a year when we remember the events in Christchurch ten years ago\, Helen’s presentation provides technical information on the strengthening and repair of heritage buildings\, the design of new buildings and large-scale public artworks\, mixed with the reality of experiencing the violence of the earthquakes and the extraordinary circumstances of working as an engineer in a devastated city as it continued to be subject to aftershocks.

DESCRIPTION: SESOC Seminar Series \nDesign for Durability & Demonstrating Compliance to the Clause B2 – Durability of the Building Code \n Over the years durability design guidance and standards have been published which assist designers with the material selection and durability design of common construction materials. For timber and concrete\, and more recently structural steel\, the Clause B2 – Durability of the NZ Building Code now covers the majority of materials used in structures in the New Zealand environment. \nHowever\, it appears that there are misunderstandings and confusion on how designers can demonstrate compliance with the Durability clause\, which ranges from the selection of corrosion protection systems to ensuring its application within the built environment. This protection needs to be undertaken to the appropriate level of quality to meet the Building Code durability requirements. \nThis seminar will first highlight the requirements of the Clause B2 – Durability\, followed by an overview of the steel durability technical specification SNZ TS 3404\, durability of some other metals used in structural design\, the durability part of the concrete and masonry standards and durability requirements for the timber standard NZS 3604. The second of these presentations in Auckland will be by Bruce Curtain\, Head of Architecture at WSP on ‘the relationship between the architect and the engineer’. \nIn this presentation Bruce will present a case study – City Hall\, the iconic headquarters for the Mayor of London and Greater London Authority. Designed by Foster + Partners and Arup the combined team utilised leading edge design and construction techniques that integrate architecture\, structure and services to create a truly unique building. DESCRIPTION:SESOC ESE Presents:\nDuctility demands for concrete members and detailing required to accommodate them\nIn contrast to earlier editions\, New Zealand Standards since the mid-2000s have required ductility demands and consequently required detailing to be checked based on local deformations of individual elements rather than on overall displacements of a complete structure. \nThis presentation will: \n·         Overview why it is important to consider deformation demands at a member\, rather than structure\, level\, \n·         Review the reasons detailing is required in order for reinforced concrete elements to sustain large plastic deformations\, \n·         Explain the basis of the method used by the New Zealand Concrete Structures Standard\, NZS 3101 for quantifying member ductility demands\, and \n·         Demonstrate the application of this method to determine ductility demands for typical elements. \nNicholas Brooke\nPhD\, BE (Hons)\, CPEng\, CMEng \nNic is a consulting engineer and Principal at Compusoft Engineering\, having previously lectured in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland. He has a broad experience in analysis\, design and research related to reinforced concrete\, including having had extensive involvement in the assessment of earthquake-damaged structures in Christchurch and Wellington.  \nNic is widely involved in the structural engineering community\, being a member of the SESOC Management Committee\, Vice President of the Concrete New Zealand Learned Society\, a member of a number of ongoing research projects including the ReCast Floors collaboration\, and a frequent presenter of industry seminars. After two years on secondment to HERA\, specialising in analysis and design of steel structures in earthquake and fire he started the Auckland office of the international consulting fire engineering firm Holmes Fire where he is a Principal and Senior Fire Engineer. \nHe is passionate about performance-based design generally and has developed expertise in performance-based fire safety design for a wide range of building types. DESCRIPTION:New Zealand Tunnelling Society (NZTS) are hosting the above presentation that may be of interest to you. \nPresented by Rafael Sierra Ballen\, KiwiRail. \nThursday\, 2 May 2019\nThe University of Auckland Engineering Campus\, Lecture Threatre 401.139 \nFrom a standing start\, following the largest ever recorded earthquake in New Zealand\, a highly committed collaborative team\, assessed the damage across twenty tunnels\, designed the repairs in view of future resilience\, and built a construction capability that delivered the works safely and on budget. Works trains were running again within 7 months\, and commercial services within 10 months. In doing so\, we reconnected communities at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. \nRafa will describe the logistical and technical challenges of refurbishing the rail tunnels in the context of the natural terrain hazards and landslides informed by his experiences of driving the quality and safety outcomes achieved. \nRafael Sierra Ballen has worked as a construction manager for over thirty years in South America\, the Middle East\, Asia\, Australia and New Zealand for major civil engineering projects as a tunnel design manager and a tunnel construction manager. \nThere will be an opportunity for refreshments and networking from 5.30pm\, with the presentation starting at 6pm. Tim has more than 100 publications related to seismic design\, seismic assessment\, seismic retrofit and mitigation of seismic risk. This presentation focuses on the recent advances on the investigation of FRP anchors and describes how FRP anchors have been utilized in several field applications and the design of the anchors. The presentation offers a unique perspective that combines the academic and practicing engineering viewpoints. \nBiography \nScott Smith is Foundation Professor of Engineering and Dean of Engineering at Southern Cross University\, Australia\, and he has held these positions since 2013. His research interests encompass the application of advanced composite materials to civil infrastructure and he is Senior Vice President of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC). Scott is also an Editor for Construction and Building Materials and an Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Civil Engineering. He holds fellowships with the International Institute for FRP in Construction\, Engineers Australia\, American Society of Civil Engineers\, and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. \nRavi Kanitkar has more than twenty years of experience in the design of new structures and the retrofit of existing structures. His focus has been on the solution of unique problems for a variety of structures\, ranging from seismic retrofit of existing buildings and bridges to the rehabilitation of infrastructure\, such as large diameter pipes and tanks\, which has been degraded due to environmental damage like corrosion. His interests include new technologies such as energy-dissipation for improving structural seismic performance and carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) for strengthening existing structures. He is a voting member of the American Concrete Institute Committee 440 which writes the state-of-the-art design guides for the use of FRP in the United States. Ravi is a licensed engineer in several US states. Ravi has authored many publications dealing with the use of new technologies for rehabilitation of existing structures and has presented his work at conferences world-wide.

DESCRIPTION:SESOC Emerging Structural Engineers Network invite you to the above presentation being delivered in Auckland in April. \nWednesday 3 April 2019\nUniversity of Auckland – Faculty of Science\, 302-G20\nNetworking from 5.30pm\, Presentation from 6pm followed by food and drinks \nPresented By Andrew Thompson – Technical Director at Holmes Consulting. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will use a case example to showcase a range of interacting behaviours\, design considerations and staging issues in concrete component design – illustrating a few of the key skills expected of a competent design engineer in reinforced concrete design. \nThe case example used will be the design of a series of conventional (non post- tensioned) reinforced concrete transfer beams in the Commercial Bay development. The transfer beams span over the CRL tunnel\, and are used to support basement structure and columns from parts of both steel framed and concrete framed buildings above\, which form part of the low rise retail component of the development. Whilst the example chosen may be a seemingly innocuous part of a project which delivered numerous greater challenges elsewhere\, it is a convenient way to step through a few different aspects of reinforced concrete design. This includes: \n\nWhat are “deep beams”?\nConventional plane sections bending/shear theory\, versus strut and tie\nSeismic design actions (including SESOC guidance recommendations)\nComposite sections (for unpropped construction)\nCalculation of deflection\nConsideration of shrinkage and creep\nStaged construction considerations (and how these considerations differ in concrete and steel construction)\nPour sequencing and pour methodology for flatness and levelness\nManagement of sensitivity/uncertainty\nCrack control from applied loads\nEarly age and thermal cracking in concrete\nRoles and responsibilities in design and construction\, and communication\n\nOpportunities will be taken where possible to touch on some of the wider applications of the above considerations (beyond the case example)\, and the literature/methods available to tackle them. It is hoped that attendees will leave with an enhanced awareness of potential considerations required in areas of reinforced concrete design\, other than seismic.

Despite starting to show signs of deterioration in the 1990s and a number of proposals to replace the bridge in the intervening years\, few initiatives were undertaken in a meaningful manner. \n  \nThe presentation explores the background and design philosophy of the designer Morandi\, overviews the construction and design of the Genoa bridge and highlights the possible causes of the collapse. The presentation concludes with some lessons learnt that could be relevant to New Zealand bridge infrastructure. \n  \nBiography \nAlessandro Palermo. Alessandro’s research areas of interest are mainly focused on structural bridge engineering\, where he is currently course coordinator of a post-graduate course. His expertise is particularly focused on implementation of seismic low-damage technologies for precast concrete bridges and buildings; His research varies from monitoring and seismic assessment of existing bridges to the use of novel materials such glass reinforcing and ultra-high performance concrete. \n  \nHe has always been passionate about history and aesthetics: he runs a very popular bridge building competition within the University of Canterbury undergraduate programme and supervises research projects on innovative pedestrian bridge design using novel materials\, technologies and 3D visualization. \n  \nWithin the last National earthquakes he has been heavily involved in reconnaissance of Canterbury and Kaikoura bridges and he is currently coordinating the Canterbury Bridge Group. Alessandro is author of more than 310 international conference/journal papers and 3 patents. He has been awarded the 2013 Ivan Skinner award for his recent advancements in earthquake engineering\, University of Canterbury Innovation Medal (2013) and 2016 Best Lecturer of the Year at the University of Canterbury.

The design of this new generation of high-rise buildings has benefited from the advancement of performance-based design methods in which structural engineers characterize expected performance for hypothesized earthquake shaking using computer simulation. The design approach has evolved rapidly – whereas a decade ago each project had its own\, project-specific basis\, today the designs are guided by a set of consensus standards. The seminar will describe the performance-based design approach and will illustrate it through the example of a tall building design in San Francisco. \nBiography\nJack Moehle received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and joined the U.C. Berkeley faculty in 1980. From 1991 to 2001 he was Director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Center at Berkeley\, and in 1996 he became founding Director of the multi-university Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center\, where he served until 2008. He has played a leading role in the development of building codes and professional engineering guidelines for the design of new construction and the assessment and rehabilitation of seismically vulnerable existing construction\, including Guidelines for Evaluation and Repair of Masonry and Concrete Walls (FEMA 306); Guidelines for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings (FEMA 273 and ASCE 41); Development of Next-Generation Performance-Based Seismic Design Procedures for New and Existing Buildings (FEMA P-58); and Guidelines for Performance-Based Seismic Design of Tall Buildings (Tall Buildings Initiative\, PEER). He has been a member of the ACI 318 Building Code Committee since 1989\, Chair of the Seismic Provisions subcommittee from 1995-2014\, and currently serves as the ACI 318 Chair. He is also author of the textbook Seismic Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings published by McGraw-Hill.

There is considerable uncertainty over the likely outcome of Brexit\, concern at the underlying causes of the recent collapse of the construction company Carillion\, and ramifications from the inquiry into the Grenfell tower block disaster. At the same time\, the UK government has recognised the very significant economic benefits that could be generated by improving the productivity and performance of the construction sector. As a result\, the government has announced a new “Transforming Construction” initiative which commits £170M of government funding\, matched by £250M from industry\, to create new construction processes and techniques. Much of this funding will focus on the development of offsite manufacturing\, digital engineering and improving productivity and skills. This presentation will give an overview of these recent developments and look in more detail at the opportunities. \nBiography \nProfessor Campbell Middleton \nLaing O’Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering & Technology\, Department of Engineering\, Cambridge University \nProfessor Campbell Middleton is the Director of the Laing O’Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering & Technology in the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University. Prior to Cambridge\, he worked for nearly 10 years in professional practice in infrastructure design and construction in Australia and with Arup in London. He is Chairman of the UK Bridge Owners Forum\, a member of the Design Panel for High Speed 2\, and has acted as an advisor or consultant to a number of organisations including Infrastructure UK\, the Highways Agency and the National Transport Commission in Australia. He has been awarded a number of academic awards including the Henry Adams Award of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 1999 & 2014\, and the Telford Premium Award (1999) and Telford Gold Medal (2010) from the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers\, the Institution of Engineers\, Australia and the Transport Research Foundation. His research interests include advanced plastic analysis\, risk & asset management\, non-destructive testing\, modular and additive manufacturing\, applications of computer vision & smart sensor applications for structural health monitoring. He is a member of the executive team responsible for overseeing the EPSRC/Innovate UK funded Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction.
