He will share a brief history of the function of the tower\, some of the assessment techniques implemented\, and the challenges faced.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nRichard Dyer – Backcountry Engineering at DOC\n\n\n\nRichard is a structural engineer at the Department of Conservation. The accelerated design program brought many challenges and intricacies which he will share with you.\n\n\n\n \n\n\nAlex Scott – Prefabricated Timber in Residential Structures \n\nAlex is a structural engineer at ENGCO Consulting Engineers who has gained experience in modular timber design whilst working with Hector Egger New Zealand. He will be talking about the use of prefabricated timber panels in residential structures. Particularly focusing on the challenges and benefits involved in the design and construction process\, and lessons learnt through a range of projects.\n\n\n\n \n\n\nJake Mayston – Christ Church Cathedral Stabilisation\nJake is a graduate engineer at Holmes who has been involved with many aspects of the iconic Christ Church Cathedral project. He will be presenting on the Stabilisation phase following the recent milestone on site of entering the building. After the Canterbury earthquake sequence of 2010-11 many buildings in the Christchurch CBD were demolished\, often unnecessarily. The presentation will focus on the reinstatement of five buildings in Christchurch CBD (complete or ongoing) which cover a broad range of structural forms and construction. Ultimately almost 80% of the built environment in the city centre was lost. But there were many other ways that structural engineers brought life back to the city. Helen will also share her experience in the development of several large scale public artworks\, which helped to draw people back into the city centre once again. \nSESOC member Helen Trappitt is a structural engineer\, director and shareholder at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers based in Christchurch. She is on the Industry Advisory Board for the University of Canterbury Civil and Natural Resources Engineering department\, where she graduated with First Class Honours in 2000. Helen is a Director of Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited\, the joint venture company tasked with reinstating the city’s most significant icon. \nHelen specialises in the seismic strengthening of heritage buildings and has experience in this sector both before and after the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence.  She is also well respected for her expertise in helping to resolve complex residential insurance claims. \nHelen was awarded the Engineering New Zealand Canterbury Branch Award for Excellence in Service to the Community in 2018 for her pro bono work helping Gap Filler\, CoCA\, FESTA and SCAPE Public Art; and for her efforts in promoting engineering as a career at girls’ schools.  In 2019 Lewis Bradford was awarded two inaugural Engineering New Zealand ENVI awards for projects Helen steered. \nLewis Bradford has been responsible for the successful structural repair and strengthening of numerous important buildings in Christchurch. These events will be a chance for our emerging engineers to share the projects they are working on\, and open some discussion around challenges and lessons learned. \nThursday 13 May\nAurecon\, Level 1 Iwikau Building\, 93 Cambridge Terrace\, Christchurch\n5.30pm networking and drinks for 6pm start \nThe Christchurch launch will be held on the 13th May and features five of our emerging structural engineers. Each engineer will have 5-10 minutes to give a brief insight into a project they are working on – whether that be a technical challenge\, design overview\, construction monitoring\, or project management. \nOur presenters for this kick-off event will include: \nJoshua Cornish – Construction Monitoring at Linwood College\nJoshua is a structural engineer who has worked at Aurecon since graduating in 2017. His recent project experience with the redevelopment of Linwood College\, in particular the Construction Monitoring phase of 4 new classroom blocks\, will be the basis for his presentation. He will share some of the challenges and lessons learned as part of this process. \nSophie Woodhams – CDHB Energy Centre\nSophie is a graduate engineer with Holmes Consulting\, and has worked on a wide range of commercial structures. She is going to share her project experience on the CDHB Energy Centre\, looking at the coordination challenges the design team faced\, and the benefits and pitfalls of BIM. \nEdbert Livia – Designing a sculpture? How?\nEdbert is a structural engineer with Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers. Born in Indonesia\, he moved to New Zealand in 2015 to study Civil Engineering. Edbert will share some of the unique design challenges when it comes to sculptural design. \nBen Exton – Temporary Works Lessons\nBen is a structural engineer who has worked for both Structex and Building Revolutions in Christchurch since graduating in 2016. He has continued study in Earthquake Engineering since\, and has a keen interest in innovation in this field. Temporary works design and construction requires a combination of clear communication and risk awareness. Ben will cover some key lessons learnt in some recent temporary works projects\, including the repair of the New Brighton Pier. \nWilliam Southby – Managing a Portfolio\nWilliam has worked at Calibre Consulting since graduating in 2016. His latest project\, managing the Totalspan Portfolio\, involves managing a team of 15 engineers across the country to provide design services to the Totalspan Franchises across the country. DESCRIPTION: SESOC Seminar Series \nDesign for Durability & Demonstrating Compliance to the Clause B2 – Durability of the Building Code \n Over the years durability design guidance and standards have been published which assist designers with the material selection and durability design of common construction materials. For timber and concrete\, and more recently structural steel\, the Clause B2 – Durability of the NZ Building Code now covers the majority of materials used in structures in the New Zealand environment. \nHowever\, it appears that there are misunderstandings and confusion on how designers can demonstrate compliance with the Durability clause\, which ranges from the selection of corrosion protection systems to ensuring its application within the built environment. This protection needs to be undertaken to the appropriate level of quality to meet the Building Code durability requirements. \nThis seminar will first highlight the requirements of the Clause B2 – Durability\, followed by an overview of the steel durability technical specification SNZ TS 3404\, durability of some other metals used in structural design\, the durability part of the concrete and masonry standards and durability requirements for the timber standard NZS 3604. DESCRIPTION:SESOC Emerging Structural Engineers – Conference Roadshow \nWhen: Wednesday 23rd October  5.30pm for a 6pm start \nWhere: Beca\, ANZ Centre\, 267 High Street\, Christchurch \nRSVP: HERE \nFollowing the SESOC Conference in August\, the Emerging Structural Engineers Network in Christchurch is bringing you a Conference Roadshow. This event is a chance to hear some of the key issues that were raised throughout the conference proceedings\, and learn more from some of the ESE presenters on what was involved. \nThe theme of the conference was “Challenging the Profession”\, and many of the speakers did just that! The roadshow will feature some presentations from the ESE conference stream\, a summary of some of the key themes shared throughout the conference\, and a presentation from keynote speaker John Hare. \nAs usual\, there will be food and drinks after the presentations. This will also be a great chance to pick the brains of those who have presented and get some inspiration for the next conference in 2021. \n  \nOur three ESE presenters are: \nMichael Simcock – Michael is a structural engineer with three years of formal experience working for Calibre Consulting in Christchurch. His prior experience includes many weekends spent working in the Christchurch Red Zone\, undertaking post-earthquake damage inspection\, site pre-pours\, and nine years of shallow-soils geotechnical testing experience.\nMichael’s paper is on the topic of Proactive Decision Making as a Graduate Engineer \nCharlotte Corston – Charlotte has worked as a structural engineer at BMC since graduating in 2016. During her time at BMC she has undertaken many earthquake assessments and new builds\, and is particularly passionate about heritage engineering.\nCharlotte’s paper uses the case study of the strengthening of the former Chief Post Office Building in Christchurch’s Cathedral Square to look at the workings of a project team. \nBen Westeneng – Ben is a structural engineer with three years of experience in structural design and seismic assessment in New Zealand. He also has a Master of Earthquake Engineering which investigated the buckling of gusset plates in BRB frames. His paper looked at the automation of seismic assessment of unreinforced masonry buildings. Ben won the SESOC ESE scholarship with this paper\, and attended the SEAOC Conference in California to present the paper there. \n  \n  \n \nKeynote presenter John Hare \nJohn Hare is a structural engineer and Chief Executive of Holmes Group\, with experience working in NZ\, the UK and the US. He is a Fellow of Engineering New Zealand and NZSEE\, and a life member and past president of SESOC. John sits on a number of advisory groups\, including the steering group for the Assessment Guidelines. \nThroughout his career\, John has had extensive experience in both the design of new structures and in the assessment and strengthening of existing buildings. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake\, he was seconded as Principal Engineering Adviser\, firstly to Civil Defence and subsequently to the Canterbury Earthquakes Recovery Authority. \n  \nJohn’s keynote address was on the theme of Challenging our views of Seismic Risk\, and whether our established practices are still fit for purpose. \nAt the SESOC Conference this year he was awarded the SESOC President’s Award for his outstanding contribution to the New Zealand Structural Engineering profession.

DESCRIPTION:Upcoming Christchurch ESE technical session: Ductility demands for concrete members and detailing required to accommodate them\, presented by Nic Brooke. \n  \nDate:                   Wednesday 4th September \nTime:                   Social and networking 5:30 – 6:00pm\nPresentation 6:00 – 7:00pm \nLocation:             Beca\nANZ Centre 267 High St \n                             Christchurch CBD \nRSVP:                    Click here \n  \nIn contrast to earlier editions\, New Zealand Standards since the mid-2000s have required ductility demands and consequently required detailing to be checked based on local deformations of individual elements rather than on overall displacements of a complete structure. \nThis presentation will: \n·         Overview why it is important to consider deformation demands at a member\, rather than structure\, level\, \n·         Review the reasons detailing is required in order for reinforced concrete elements to sustain large plastic deformations\, \n·         Explain the basis of the method used by the New Zealand Concrete Structures Standard\, NZS 3101 for quantifying member ductility demands\, and \n·         Demonstrate the application of this method to determine ductility demands for typical elements. \n\n Nicholas Brooke\nPhD\, BE (Hons)\, CPEng\, CMEng \nNic is a consulting engineer and Principal at Compusoft Engineering\, having previously lectured in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland. He has a broad experience in analysis\, design and research related to reinforced concrete\, including having had extensive involvement in the assessment of earthquake-damaged structures in Christchurch and Wellington.  \nNic is widely involved in the structural engineering community\, being a member of the SESOC Management Committee\, Vice President of the Concrete New Zealand Learned Society\, a member of a number of ongoing research projects including the ReCast Floors collaboration\, and a frequent presenter of industry seminars. Nicholas was also technical editor and chair of the committee responsible for producing the revision for Part C5 of the assessment guidelines that was released in late 2018.

The EPB Methodology provides the framework and rules for how potentially earthquake prone buildings are identified\, the scope and form of engineering assessments\, and criteria for how territorial authorities review and accept engineering assessments and decide on whether or not buildings are earthquake prone. It is essential that engineers undertaking seismic assessments for earthquake prone purposes have a good understanding of the provisions of the EPB Methodology – in particular\, what their assessments need to address and how they report their assessments to TAs. \nDave Brunsdon\, engineering adviser to MBIE’s Building System Assurance team\, will present the key points of the EPB Methodology for engineering practitioners. This will be a condensed version of the MBIE system training seminar delivered in August 2017\, but will explore additional aspects such as the treatment of interconnected buildings and use of the Assessment Summary Table template.

SUMMARY:Simplified Lateral Mechanism Analysis (SLaMA) Seminar (ChCh)
DESCRIPTION:This seminar provides guidance on the simplified lateral mechanism analysis (SLaMA) of existing buildings. The seminar aims to clarify the conceptual basis of how the approach can be used to assist in establishing the %NBS of a building. Two worked examples will be reviewed during the seminar\, making reference to relevant parts of the NZSEE detailed seismic assessment guidelines and a newly released set of guidelines for SLaMA. It is intended that practitioners inexperienced with the subject of seismic assessment will leave the seminar equipped with a better understanding of the SLaMA approach and valuable notes for later reference. \nDownload Registration form here\nSpeaker Profile\nTim Sullivan \nTim Sullivan is an Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury\, New Zealand. Prior to that he was based in Italy where he was head of the Design Methods Section of the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering\, and Assistant Professor at the University of Pavia. Tim’s research interests lie mainly in the examination of the fundamentals of seismic design and experimental testing techniques. He is particularly well recognised for his work in displacement-based seismic design and assessment methods\, with his PhD supervised by Nigel Priestley and Gian Michele Calvi. Tim has more than 100 publications related to seismic design\, seismic assessment\, seismic retrofit and mitigation of seismic risk. Tim is also a chartered professional engineer with the UK institute of Civil Engineers\, having worked in the UK\, New Zealand\, Germany and Italy on a wide range of building and bridge projects. \nBarry Davidson \nBarry has over thirty years’ experience in structural engineering\, design\, research and teaching. He has a wide-ranging background that includes the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete and unreinforced masonry buildings and the design of damping and isolation systems to mitigate vibrations for buildings\, stairways and bridges. He taught and lead research into seismic design at the University of Auckland for over twenty years\, while remaining in contact with the design profession through his company\, Compusoft Engineering Ltd. Whether it be technical challenges in design or construction projects\, building relationships with clients and colleagues or the development of professional skills\, the transition from university student to professional engineer can be tough – come and learn from the experiences of those that have been there as our panellists share their “things I learnt the hard way”. \nAfter the panel session and questions\, stay for a tipple and a bite\, and a chat with some like-minded structural engineers. \nOur three panelists are: \nChris Burrell-Smith\nChris is a Chartered Professional Structural engineer and an associate and shareholder with Richards Consulting Engineers. Chris started his career in Christchurch just after the Darfield 2010 earthquake and was fully involved in the assessment and remediation of damaged educational\, commercial and residential structures from the start of his career. He has since worked on a variety of structural projects\, working closely with architects\, developers\, local authorities\, and home owners. Chris has focused on ensuring that the solutions produced are appropriate for the client and project requirements. Chris now manages the technical systems and training for 10 other engineers. \nHelen Trappitt\nHelen is a structural engineer\, director and shareholder at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers based in Christchurch. Since graduating from the University of Canterbury with BE(Hons) in 2000\, she has gone on to become a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the University of Canterbury Civil and Natural Resources Engineering department. Helen specialises in the seismic strengthening of heritage buildings and has experience in this sector both before and after the Canterbury earthquake sequence. This led to her appointment as a Director of Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Ltd in 2018. Recently Helen was awarded the Engineering New Zealand Canterbury Branch Award for Excellence in Service to the Community\, which recognised her pro bono work with Gap Filler\, CoCA\, FESTA\, SCAPE Public Art and promoting engineering careers in girls’ schools. \nScott Davies-Colley\nA design Engineer with Holmes Consulting in Christchurch\, Scott arrived at the University of Canterbury to start his engineering degree the week of the February 2011 Canterbury earthquake. The subsequent rebuild in Christchurch has formed a large part of his engineering career. With the immense extent of work required for the rebuild of a city\, Scott has had opportunities to work on a vast array of projects. These have included heritage URM buildings\, green field site projects such as Rolleston Secondary School and recently a new multi-storey low damage base isolated office building at 2 Cathedral Square.
