DESCRIPTION:Join our SESOC President Michelle Grand and her co-speaker Gordon Hughes as they present the 10 Tips for Better Designs of Low-Rise Structures (aka Low-Rise Learnings) \nThe seminar will provide ten tips for the better design of low- rise structures\, with a focus on commercial buildings. \nLow- rise structures are one of the most common types of designed buildings in New Zealand.  There have been multiple recent cases of structural designs not meeting requirements. \nThis seminar aims to provide practical tips to structural engineers operating in this space. \nAt the end of the seminar\, there will be a SESOC Presidents reception\, where attendees can join us for drinks and a catch-up. \nThis seminar will be from 1:00pm – 5:00 pm (registration starts at 12:30pm)\nA light refreshment for afternoon tea will be served. Food and drinks will be offered during the President’s reception between 5:00 – 6:00 pm \nThis seminar is being offered at a reduced rate for SESOC members to encourage as many members as possible who work in this space to attend\, particularly emerging engineers\, those operating in smaller practices\, or larger firms able to send more staff.  It is also conducted by the SESOC President in lieu of a president’s roadshow. \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nSustainable Design for Structural Engineers\nSESOC is excited to host their first webinar on Sustainable Design for Structural Engineers. \nNew Zealand’s net-zero-carbon legislation requires all industries to contribute to the carbon reduction journey and this is no different for the Construction and Structural Design industries.  The Building and Construction sector currently accounts for around 15% of New Zealand’s annual carbon emissions (MBIE\, 2021)\, and around half of this is through the materials used in buildings and infrastructure. \nSESOC is committed to supporting the shift towards net zero carbon construction\, and to that end\, are looking for ways we can support our members to engage\, understand\, and undertake embodied carbon assessments for their projects\, increasing the ‘carbon literacy’ of the industry (and clients) ahead of the expected mandatory reporting requirements from Central Government. \nWhen: Thursday 28th October at 5.30pm\nWhere: Online Via Zoom\nCost: Free | Register here \nTo Kick start our conversations on Sustainable design\, we welcome Will Arnold\, head of Climate Action for the Institution of Structural Engineers in the UK to share the journey that the UK has been on over the past few years. \nFrom within our own SESOC Sustainable Design Task Force\, Jared Keen and Nick Carmen will then share their presentations from the SESOC 2021 Conference focussing on how we as structural engineers can make a positive contribution through our projects. \nQ and A for the speakers will run after the presentations. \n\n\n\n\nWill Arnold\, Head of Climate Action\, the Institution of Structural Engineers \nWill leads the IStructE’s response to the climate emergency\, bringing sustainability action into all aspects of its work. He is responsible for driving change within the profession\, setting the minimum sustainability standards for institution members\, producing sustainability publications and training to support this\, and collaborating across the wider industry as it moves towards zero emissions. Previous to his work with the institution\, Will was a practising structural engineer at Arup for 10 years where he was responsible for key aspects of ambitious architectural projects across the world. \n  \nWill is chair of the Construction Industry Council’s 2050 Group\, and an active member of The Edge thinktank\, the UK Built Environment Advisory Group\, and the Engineering Advisory Group for The Structural Engineer magazine. He also sits on the judging panel for The Structural Awards. In 2021\, Will was presented with the President’s Award by the Institution\, in recognition of his work instigating change in the field of structural sustainability.\n\n\n\nEmbodied Carbon in Structural Design   \nNick Carman – Mott MacDonald NZ \n Based on some recent experiences and projects quantifying embodied carbon for buildings in Aotearoa-New Zealand\, the purpose of this presentation is to discuss the motivation behind studying embodied carbon\, fundamentals of LCA for buildings and typical results from recent studies\, from the viewpoint of an engineer entering into the world of LCA. \nA few key areas of uncertainty are discussed\, such as appropriate steelwork embodied carbon factors (ECFs)\, comparison between as-designed and as-constructed measures\, and whether the use of timber to decarbonise a project is a silver bullet. \n  \nNick Carman is a Technical Director within the Built Environment sector at Mott MacDonald\, with a strong focus on sustainability and  low-carbon design brought about by collaboration.  He has worked on projects throughout Australasia\, the UK\, the Middle-East and Canada\, but his favourite work remains that in his home of New Zealand.\n\n\n\nChallenges and Possible Solutions for Structural Engineers Seeking to Make a Positive Contributions to the Climate Emergency \nJared Keen – BECA \nAs the construction industry\, and the society within which we operate\, seeks mitigations to our present climate emergency\, structural engineers are seeking ways to transform from part of the problem\, to part of the solution.  In this presentation\, Jared examines the barriers that face practicing engineers in the meaningful implementation of low-carbon structures\, and how those barriers might be hurdled\, either by individual design teams\, or by the industry at large. \n  \nJared Keen is a Technical Director at Beca.  As a practicing structural engineer he has delivered major projects throughout New Zealand\, the United Kingdom and Europe.  He is the current IStructE New Zealand branch chair\, and an industry affiliate for QuakeCore.  He has a particular interest in sustainability and low damaged design and has delivered multiple timber projects in New Zealand\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Aftermath of Disaster in Christchurch - Auckland Presentation
DESCRIPTION:SESOC is pleased to invite you to attend Helen Trappitt’s presentation\, The Aftermath of Disaster in Christchurch – Repairing\, strengthening and creating new hope. \nTuesday 18th May 6pm: University of Auckland – Faculty of Engineering\, 1.401 \n  \nHelen originally shared this presentation as keynote speaker at the virtual ASEC conference last year\, and to an audience in Christchurch in March this year as part of the Engineering New Zealand Ten Years On Commemorations. \nHer abstract poses the argument that the most sustainable building is one that is able to be restored and repaired following a disaster. After the Canterbury earthquake sequence of 2010-11 many buildings in the Christchurch CBD were demolished\, often unnecessarily. The presentation will focus on the reinstatement of five buildings in Christchurch CBD (complete or ongoing) which cover a broad range of structural forms and construction. Ultimately almost 80% of the built environment in the city centre was lost. But there were many other ways that structural engineers brought life back to the city. Helen will also share her experience in the development of several large scale public artworks\, which helped to draw people back into the city centre once again. \nSESOC member Helen Trappitt is a structural engineer\, director and shareholder at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers based in Christchurch. She is on the Industry Advisory Board for the University of Canterbury Civil and Natural Resources Engineering department\, where she graduated with First Class Honours in 2000. Helen is a Director of Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited\, the joint venture company tasked with reinstating the city’s most significant icon. \nHelen specialises in the seismic strengthening of heritage buildings and has experience in this sector both before and after the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence.  She is also well respected for her expertise in helping to resolve complex residential insurance claims. \nHelen was awarded the Engineering New Zealand Canterbury Branch Award for Excellence in Service to the Community in 2018 for her pro bono work helping Gap Filler\, CoCA\, FESTA and SCAPE Public Art; and for her efforts in promoting engineering as a career at girls’ schools.  In 2019 Lewis Bradford was awarded two inaugural Engineering New Zealand ENVI awards for projects Helen steered. \nLewis Bradford has been responsible for the successful structural repair and strengthening of numerous important buildings in Christchurch. They were internationally recognised in 2019 with the IStructE award for structures in extreme conditions for the design of the new central library Turanga. \nIn a year when we remember the events in Christchurch ten years ago\, Helen’s presentation provides technical information on the strengthening and repair of heritage buildings\, the design of new buildings and large-scale public artworks\, mixed with the reality of experiencing the violence of the earthquakes and the extraordinary circumstances of working as an engineer in a devastated city as it continued to be subject to aftershocks.

SUMMARY:Design for Durability & Demonstrating Compliance to the Clause B2 Seminar
DESCRIPTION: SESOC Seminar Series \nDesign for Durability & Demonstrating Compliance to the Clause B2 – Durability of the Building Code \n Over the years durability design guidance and standards have been published which assist designers with the material selection and durability design of common construction materials. For timber and concrete\, and more recently structural steel\, the Clause B2 – Durability of the NZ Building Code now covers the majority of materials used in structures in the New Zealand environment. \nHowever\, it appears that there are misunderstandings and confusion on how designers can demonstrate compliance with the Durability clause\, which ranges from the selection of corrosion protection systems to ensuring its application within the built environment. This protection needs to be undertaken to the appropriate level of quality to meet the Building Code durability requirements. \nThis seminar will first highlight the requirements of the Clause B2 – Durability\, followed by an overview of the steel durability technical specification SNZ TS 3404\, durability of some other metals used in structural design\, the durability part of the concrete and masonry standards and durability requirements for the timber standard NZS 3604. This includes a discussion on achieving the required durability during construction\, based on the relevant standards\, including the steel fabrication and erection standard AS/NZS 5131\, the concrete construction standard NZS 3109\, the masonry Standard NZS 4230 and associated timber standards and good practice. \nExamples of acceptable solutions\, as well as case studies of when things go wrong will be given together with remedies and good practice and the seminar will conclude with the current status of the relationship between Producer Statements and the B2 Clause\, what to do in that situation and a possible pathway moving forward. \nSeminar Dates \n Christchurch\, Thursday 18 February 2021 \nAuckland\, Tuesday 23 February 2021 \nWellington\, Thursday 25 February 2021 \n To register or for more information click here to download the seminar brochure or contact us on 09 536 5410 or email us info@bluepacificevents.com

DESCRIPTION:SESOC ESE Presents:\nDuctility demands for concrete members and detailing required to accommodate them\nIn contrast to earlier editions\, New Zealand Standards since the mid-2000s have required ductility demands and consequently required detailing to be checked based on local deformations of individual elements rather than on overall displacements of a complete structure. \nThis presentation will: \n·         Overview why it is important to consider deformation demands at a member\, rather than structure\, level\, \n·         Review the reasons detailing is required in order for reinforced concrete elements to sustain large plastic deformations\, \n·         Explain the basis of the method used by the New Zealand Concrete Structures Standard\, NZS 3101 for quantifying member ductility demands\, and \n·         Demonstrate the application of this method to determine ductility demands for typical elements. \nNicholas Brooke\nPhD\, BE (Hons)\, CPEng\, CMEng \nNic is a consulting engineer and Principal at Compusoft Engineering\, having previously lectured in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Auckland. He has a broad experience in analysis\, design and research related to reinforced concrete\, including having had extensive involvement in the assessment of earthquake-damaged structures in Christchurch and Wellington.  \nNic is widely involved in the structural engineering community\, being a member of the SESOC Management Committee\, Vice President of the Concrete New Zealand Learned Society\, a member of a number of ongoing research projects including the ReCast Floors collaboration\, and a frequent presenter of industry seminars. Nicholas was also technical editor and chair of the committee responsible for producing the revision for Part C5 of the assessment guidelines that was released in late 2018.

SUMMARY:SESOC Emerging Structural Engineers Network – Wellington Launch “Things I learnt the hard way”
DESCRIPTION:SESOC is excited to announce the Wellington launch of the Emerging Structural Engineers Network. \nThis follows successful launch events held in Auckland and Christchurch. \nTuesday 14 May 2019\nOpus Presentation Room – Level 10\, Majestic Centre\, 100 Willis St\, Wellington \nThere will be an opportunity for networking with pizza and drinks from 5.30pm\, the presentations will start at 6pm.  \nWe’re fortunate to have four leaders in the structural engineering industry sharing on “things I learnt the hard way”. Whether it be technical challenges in design or construction projects\, building relationships with clients and colleagues or the development of professional skills\, the transition from university student to professional engineer can be tough – come and learn from the experiences of those that have been there. \nOur four panellists are: \nAnna Philpot \nAnna graduated from Canterbury University with a BE(Hons) in 2010 and started work at Holmes Consulting in Wellington two weeks before the February earthquake in Christchurch. While a large part of the New Zealand structural engineering sector focused on the Christchurch aftermath and rebuild\, Wellington building owners and tenants initiated a more urgent and focused review of the seismic performance of their properties. This lead to opportunities for Anna to work on several interesting and challenging projects including The Majestic Centre\, Wellington Railway Station\, Wellington Museum and Wellington Town Hall. The challenges presented by these projects often required unique approaches and solutions and were fantastic for developing Anna’s engineering fundamentals and problem solving skills. \nSteve Kemp\nSteve is a Technical Director with Beca\, focussing on buildings and more recently airport terminal buildings.  Steve spent his early career in the UK working in both private and public sectors.  In 2007\, he moved to New Zealand to take a position with Beca as a senior structural engineer.  Projects included a variety of sectors such as power generation\, schools and rail. Steve returned to the UK briefly to lead a structural engineering regional office and was responsible for finding and winning work as well as delivering it.  Returning to New Zealand in 2014\, Steve has led a number of projects\, most with an aviation focus\, such as the terminal south extension project at Wellington Airport. \nSusan Temple\nSusan graduated from Bradford University in the UK with MEng\, and worked for a small consultant Engineering firm before making the switch to main contracting. For the following 4 years\, she was the Structural Engineer for their in-house design department\, before coming to New Zealand in 2005. Susan is an integral part of the on-site and pre-construction team at Hawkins where she carries out all temporary works designs and reviews\, develops and manages construction programmes and methodologies\, carries out coordination reviews to pre-empt site problems\, and ensures structural and civil QA processes are implemented and controlled. Susan’s roles at Hawkins have included Temp Works Engineer for the Supreme Court\, (Construction) Project Manager in Vanuatu\, and now Senior Engineer. She has recently undertaken a series of nationwide presentations with SARNZ\, WorkSafe and the TWf regarding scaffold design and installation. \nPaul Campbell\nPaul is a Technical Leader for WSP Opus\, and a Past-President and life member of the Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand (SESOC). Paul is passionate about structural engineering and believes that we need strong advocacy and leadership in the profession. His focus is giving structural engineers the tools and support they need to practice their profession.  After the Canterbury Earthquake sequence of 2010 and 2011 Paul held various technical and leadership roles seconded within Christchurch City Council\, Civil Defence and the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA). Subsequent to the earthquakes he has given evidence at the Canterbury Earthquake Royal Commission\, put submissions to the New Zealand Government on Earthquake legislative matters and spent time working on improving the resilience and preparedness of New Zealand to respond to the next big event.  \nThe event is free but registration is essential\, Please RSVP below by Friday 10 May.

SUMMARY:Simplified Lateral Mechanism Analysis (SLaMA) - Wellington
DESCRIPTION:This seminar provides guidance on the simplified lateral mechanism analysis (SLaMA) of existing buildings. The seminar aims to clarify the conceptual basis of how the approach can be used to assist in establishing the %NBS of a building. Two worked examples will be reviewed during the seminar\, making reference to relevant parts of the NZSEE detailed seismic assessment guidelines and a newly released set of guidelines for SLaMA. It is intended that practitioners inexperienced with the subject of seismic assessment will leave the seminar equipped with a better understanding of the SLaMA approach and valuable notes for later reference. \nDownload Registration form here\nSpeaker Profile\nTim Sullivan \nTim Sullivan is an Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury\, New Zealand. Prior to that he was based in Italy where he was head of the Design Methods Section of the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering\, and Assistant Professor at the University of Pavia. Tim’s research interests lie mainly in the examination of the fundamentals of seismic design and experimental testing techniques. He is particularly well recognised for his work in displacement-based seismic design and assessment methods\, with his PhD supervised by Nigel Priestley and Gian Michele Calvi. Tim has more than 100 publications related to seismic design\, seismic assessment\, seismic retrofit and mitigation of seismic risk. Tim is also a chartered professional engineer with the UK institute of Civil Engineers\, having worked in the UK\, New Zealand\, Germany and Italy on a wide range of building and bridge projects. \nBarry Davidson \nBarry has over thirty years’ experience in structural engineering\, design\, research and teaching. He has a wide-ranging background that includes the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete and unreinforced masonry buildings and the design of damping and isolation systems to mitigate vibrations for buildings\, stairways and bridges. He taught and lead research into seismic design at the University of Auckland for over twenty years\, while remaining in contact with the design profession through his company\, Compusoft Engineering Ltd.
