The Waikato launch will be held on the 10th of October and features a panel of speakers who are each undoubtedly leaders in the structural engineering industry. Whether it be technical challenges in design or construction projects\, building relationships with clients and colleagues or the development of professional skills\, the transition from university student to professional engineer can be tough – come and learn from the experiences of those that have been there as our panellists share their “things I learnt the hard way”.  \n  \nThe event is held in partnership with Young Engineers Waikato and AECOM. \n  \nOur panellists are: \n  \nAlex Vindel – Alex Vindel is Hamilton Structures Team Leader for AECOM NZ and has 16 years of experience working as a consulting structural engineer. Alex obtained a BEng Hons degree in Aerospace Engineering but transitioned into Structures with his first ‘proper’ job for a small structural civil consultancy in the UK. After five years Alex moved to AECOM UK and quickly gained experience in a diverse range of projects\, sectors and contractual arrangements. During his time in the UK\, Alex had significant roles in delivering projects in both traditional and modular forms of construction for the Ministry of Defence\, refurbishment of grade listed historical buildings\, design optioneering for Clapham Junction train station upgrade and design of airside ancillary buildings at Heathrow airport to name a few select projects. In 2016 Alex moved to Hamilton and as team lead has been responsible for both the management and technical delivery of projects in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region. \n  \nDaniel Moore – Daniel joined Holmes Consulting in 2011\, making the move south to Hamilton from Auckland to become the Hamilton office Business Manager. Daniel has 10 years of design experience and 15 years in the industry. His project experience has included bulk retail\, industrial developments and retail complexes. Daniel enjoys building lasting relationships with clients and members of the design team during a project and sharing in the reward of a successful project. On many of his projects\, Daniel and his team have been the Lead Consultant responsible for developing the overall building and site layout and developing the architectural\, structural and civil components. Through his role as Lead Consultant (and Engineer to Contract) he has developed an extensive understanding of how buildings go together and the significant ongoing influence they can have on the businesses and communities they support. \n  \nJohn Warrington – John is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with WSP Opus\, based in their Hamilton Office\, and holds both CPEng and CEng registrations with Engineering New Zealand and the Institution of Civil Engineers in the UK. John has experience across a broad range of Civil Engineering disciplines having been involved in the design of cooling water systems for power stations\, geotechnical feasibility studies for nuclear and gas fired power stations\, design of small-scale hydro-electric schemes and the management of geotechnical input to light rail projects amongst others. John has worked for both consultancies and client organisations and as a result has developed a good understanding of the requirement for strong and open relationships between all parties involved in order to ensure the successful delivery of projects. The first of these presentations in Auckland will be led by Martin Feeney of Holmes Fire on ‘Fire Engineering for Structural Engineers’. Keep an eye out for similar presentations being rolled out throughout New Zealand in the near future. \n  \nIn this presentation Martin will describe the key effects of fire on steel\, concrete and timber structures and how structural engineers can effectively work together with fire engineers to ensure economical solutions. After two years on secondment to HERA\, specialising in analysis and design of steel structures in earthquake and fire he started the Auckland office of the international consulting fire engineering firm Holmes Fire where he is a Principal and Senior Fire Engineer. \nHe is passionate about performance-based design generally and has developed expertise in performance-based fire safety design for a wide range of building types. His special interest is assessing performance of structures when exposed to fire. He has carried out designs on projects in New Zealand\, Australia\, Spain\, California and New York to establish appropriate performance-based solutions for the fire performance of steel structures.

Whether it be technical challenges in design or construction projects\, building relationships with clients and colleagues or the development of professional skills\, the transition from university student to professional engineer can be tough – come and learn from the experiences of those that have been there as our panellists share “things I learnt the hard way”. \n  \nThis will be a fantastic opportunity to meet and network with fellow\, like-minded structural engineers working in Dunedin. \n  \nOur three panellists are: \n  \nAdam Moffat \nAdam is a structural engineer at Beca\, and has worked in Christchurch\, London and Dunedin over the last 13 years. He has worked primarily on commercial and institutional projects for clients such as Christchurch Airport\, University of Canterbury and University of Otago. He has spent a lot of time on construction sites\, which are fertile grounds for hard lessons. He also worked in Christchurch during and after the earthquakes\, which has shaped his approach to structural engineering \n  \nEvelyn Guiguet \nEvelyn is originally from Argentina where she completed her degree in Civil/Structural Engineering. Evelyn came to New Zealand in 2015 and worked in Canterbury until she joined Calibre in 2018. She particularly enjoys seismic engineering but likes to have a variety of projects on the go including bridge design. Evelyn recently had the chance to work on the Sea to Shore Tokelau wharf project. \n  \nIan Walsh \nIan has over 40 years of infrastructure sector experience with civil and hydraulic structures. His early MWD experience in bridge design then to irrigation development resulted in his first dam using concrete faced rockfill construction at Loganburn. Subsequent investigation roles for major Hydro Electric Development Proposals reinforced this interest and eventually led to further studies in Geotechnical and Dam Engineering in Australia and a short period getting up to speed with advances in constitutive modelling at Imperial College London. Ian’s design and peer review interests in recent years has focussed upon dam safety management and renewable energy developments involving Hydropower and Wind Energy. Ian is also active on major transportation projects promoting and advising on risk management and undertaking Engineer to Contract roles. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:SESOC is excited to announce the Wellington launch of the Emerging Structural Engineers Network. \nThis follows successful launch events held in Auckland and Christchurch. \nTuesday 14 May 2019\nOpus Presentation Room – Level 10\, Majestic Centre\, 100 Willis St\, Wellington \nThere will be an opportunity for networking with pizza and drinks from 5.30pm\, the presentations will start at 6pm.  \nWe’re fortunate to have four leaders in the structural engineering industry sharing on “things I learnt the hard way”. Whether it be technical challenges in design or construction projects\, building relationships with clients and colleagues or the development of professional skills\, the transition from university student to professional engineer can be tough – come and learn from the experiences of those that have been there. \nOur four panellists are: \nAnna Philpot \nAnna graduated from Canterbury University with a BE(Hons) in 2010 and started work at Holmes Consulting in Wellington two weeks before the February earthquake in Christchurch. While a large part of the New Zealand structural engineering sector focused on the Christchurch aftermath and rebuild\, Wellington building owners and tenants initiated a more urgent and focused review of the seismic performance of their properties. This lead to opportunities for Anna to work on several interesting and challenging projects including The Majestic Centre\, Wellington Railway Station\, Wellington Museum and Wellington Town Hall. The challenges presented by these projects often required unique approaches and solutions and were fantastic for developing Anna’s engineering fundamentals and problem solving skills. \nSteve Kemp\nSteve is a Technical Director with Beca\, focussing on buildings and more recently airport terminal buildings.  Steve spent his early career in the UK working in both private and public sectors.  In 2007\, he moved to New Zealand to take a position with Beca as a senior structural engineer.  Projects included a variety of sectors such as power generation\, schools and rail. Steve returned to the UK briefly to lead a structural engineering regional office and was responsible for finding and winning work as well as delivering it.  Returning to New Zealand in 2014\, Steve has led a number of projects\, most with an aviation focus\, such as the terminal south extension project at Wellington Airport. \nSusan Temple\nSusan graduated from Bradford University in the UK with MEng\, and worked for a small consultant Engineering firm before making the switch to main contracting. For the following 4 years\, she was the Structural Engineer for their in-house design department\, before coming to New Zealand in 2005. Susan is an integral part of the on-site and pre-construction team at Hawkins where she carries out all temporary works designs and reviews\, develops and manages construction programmes and methodologies\, carries out coordination reviews to pre-empt site problems\, and ensures structural and civil QA processes are implemented and controlled. Susan’s roles at Hawkins have included Temp Works Engineer for the Supreme Court\, (Construction) Project Manager in Vanuatu\, and now Senior Engineer. She has recently undertaken a series of nationwide presentations with SARNZ\, WorkSafe and the TWf regarding scaffold design and installation. \nPaul Campbell\nPaul is a Technical Leader for WSP Opus\, and a Past-President and life member of the Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand (SESOC). Paul is passionate about structural engineering and believes that we need strong advocacy and leadership in the profession. His focus is giving structural engineers the tools and support they need to practice their profession.  After the Canterbury Earthquake sequence of 2010 and 2011 Paul held various technical and leadership roles seconded within Christchurch City Council\, Civil Defence and the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA). Subsequent to the earthquakes he has given evidence at the Canterbury Earthquake Royal Commission\, put submissions to the New Zealand Government on Earthquake legislative matters and spent time working on improving the resilience and preparedness of New Zealand to respond to the next big event.  \nThe event is free but registration is essential\, Please RSVP below by Friday 10 May.

DESCRIPTION:New Zealand Tunnelling Society (NZTS) are hosting the above presentation that may be of interest to you. \nPresented by Rafael Sierra Ballen\, KiwiRail. \nThursday\, 2 May 2019\nThe University of Auckland Engineering Campus\, Lecture Threatre 401.139 \nFrom a standing start\, following the largest ever recorded earthquake in New Zealand\, a highly committed collaborative team\, assessed the damage across twenty tunnels\, designed the repairs in view of future resilience\, and built a construction capability that delivered the works safely and on budget. Works trains were running again within 7 months\, and commercial services within 10 months. In doing so\, we reconnected communities at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. \nRafa will describe the logistical and technical challenges of refurbishing the rail tunnels in the context of the natural terrain hazards and landslides informed by his experiences of driving the quality and safety outcomes achieved. \nRafael Sierra Ballen has worked as a construction manager for over thirty years in South America\, the Middle East\, Asia\, Australia and New Zealand for major civil engineering projects as a tunnel design manager and a tunnel construction manager. \nThere will be an opportunity for refreshments and networking from 5.30pm\, with the presentation starting at 6pm. The EPB Methodology provides the framework and rules for how potentially earthquake prone buildings are identified\, the scope and form of engineering assessments\, and criteria for how territorial authorities review and accept engineering assessments and decide on whether or not buildings are earthquake prone. It is essential that engineers undertaking seismic assessments for earthquake prone purposes have a good understanding of the provisions of the EPB Methodology – in particular\, what their assessments need to address and how they report their assessments to TAs. \nDave Brunsdon\, engineering adviser to MBIE’s Building System Assurance team\, will present the key points of the EPB Methodology for engineering practitioners. This will be a condensed version of the MBIE system training seminar delivered in August 2017\, but will explore additional aspects such as the treatment of interconnected buildings and use of the Assessment Summary Table template.

This presentation focuses on the recent advances on the investigation of FRP anchors and describes how FRP anchors have been utilized in several field applications and the design of the anchors. The presentation offers a unique perspective that combines the academic and practicing engineering viewpoints. \nBiography \nScott Smith is Foundation Professor of Engineering and Dean of Engineering at Southern Cross University\, Australia\, and he has held these positions since 2013. His research interests encompass the application of advanced composite materials to civil infrastructure and he is Senior Vice President of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC). Scott is also an Editor for Construction and Building Materials and an Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Civil Engineering. He holds fellowships with the International Institute for FRP in Construction\, Engineers Australia\, American Society of Civil Engineers\, and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. \nRavi Kanitkar has more than twenty years of experience in the design of new structures and the retrofit of existing structures. His focus has been on the solution of unique problems for a variety of structures\, ranging from seismic retrofit of existing buildings and bridges to the rehabilitation of infrastructure\, such as large diameter pipes and tanks\, which has been degraded due to environmental damage like corrosion. His interests include new technologies such as energy-dissipation for improving structural seismic performance and carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) for strengthening existing structures. He is a voting member of the American Concrete Institute Committee 440 which writes the state-of-the-art design guides for the use of FRP in the United States. Ravi is a licensed engineer in several US states. Ravi has authored many publications dealing with the use of new technologies for rehabilitation of existing structures and has presented his work at conferences world-wide.

DESCRIPTION:This seminar provides guidance on the simplified lateral mechanism analysis (SLaMA) of existing buildings. The seminar aims to clarify the conceptual basis of how the approach can be used to assist in establishing the %NBS of a building. Two worked examples will be reviewed during the seminar\, making reference to relevant parts of the NZSEE detailed seismic assessment guidelines and a newly released set of guidelines for SLaMA. It is intended that practitioners inexperienced with the subject of seismic assessment will leave the seminar equipped with a better understanding of the SLaMA approach and valuable notes for later reference. \nDownload Registration form here\nSpeaker Profile\nTim Sullivan \nTim Sullivan is an Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury\, New Zealand. Prior to that he was based in Italy where he was head of the Design Methods Section of the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering\, and Assistant Professor at the University of Pavia. Tim’s research interests lie mainly in the examination of the fundamentals of seismic design and experimental testing techniques. He is particularly well recognised for his work in displacement-based seismic design and assessment methods\, with his PhD supervised by Nigel Priestley and Gian Michele Calvi. Tim has more than 100 publications related to seismic design\, seismic assessment\, seismic retrofit and mitigation of seismic risk. Tim is also a chartered professional engineer with the UK institute of Civil Engineers\, having worked in the UK\, New Zealand\, Germany and Italy on a wide range of building and bridge projects. \nBarry Davidson \nBarry has over thirty years’ experience in structural engineering\, design\, research and teaching. He has a wide-ranging background that includes the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete and unreinforced masonry buildings and the design of damping and isolation systems to mitigate vibrations for buildings\, stairways and bridges. He taught and lead research into seismic design at the University of Auckland for over twenty years\, while remaining in contact with the design profession through his company\, Compusoft Engineering Ltd. DESCRIPTION:SESOC Emerging Structural Engineers Network invite you to the above presentation being delivered in Auckland in April. \nWednesday 3 April 2019\nUniversity of Auckland – Faculty of Science\, 302-G20\nNetworking from 5.30pm\, Presentation from 6pm followed by food and drinks \nPresented By Andrew Thompson – Technical Director at Holmes Consulting. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will use a case example to showcase a range of interacting behaviours\, design considerations and staging issues in concrete component design – illustrating a few of the key skills expected of a competent design engineer in reinforced concrete design. \nThe case example used will be the design of a series of conventional (non post- tensioned) reinforced concrete transfer beams in the Commercial Bay development. The transfer beams span over the CRL tunnel\, and are used to support basement structure and columns from parts of both steel framed and concrete framed buildings above\, which form part of the low rise retail component of the development. Whilst the example chosen may be a seemingly innocuous part of a project which delivered numerous greater challenges elsewhere\, it is a convenient way to step through a few different aspects of reinforced concrete design. This includes: \n\nWhat are “deep beams”?\nConventional plane sections bending/shear theory\, versus strut and tie\nSeismic design actions (including SESOC guidance recommendations)\nComposite sections (for unpropped construction)\nCalculation of deflection\nConsideration of shrinkage and creep\nStaged construction considerations (and how these considerations differ in concrete and steel construction)\nPour sequencing and pour methodology for flatness and levelness\nManagement of sensitivity/uncertainty\nCrack control from applied loads\nEarly age and thermal cracking in concrete\nRoles and responsibilities in design and construction\, and communication\n\nOpportunities will be taken where possible to touch on some of the wider applications of the above considerations (beyond the case example)\, and the literature/methods available to tackle them. It is hoped that attendees will leave with an enhanced awareness of potential considerations required in areas of reinforced concrete design\, other than seismic.

Whether it be technical challenges in design or construction projects\, building relationships with clients and colleagues or the development of professional skills\, the transition from university student to professional engineer can be tough – come and learn from the experiences of those that have been there as our panellists share their “things I learnt the hard way”. \nAfter the panel session and questions\, stay for a tipple and a bite\, and a chat with some like-minded structural engineers. \nOur three panelists are: \nChris Burrell-Smith\nChris is a Chartered Professional Structural engineer and an associate and shareholder with Richards Consulting Engineers. Chris started his career in Christchurch just after the Darfield 2010 earthquake and was fully involved in the assessment and remediation of damaged educational\, commercial and residential structures from the start of his career. He has since worked on a variety of structural projects\, working closely with architects\, developers\, local authorities\, and home owners. Chris has focused on ensuring that the solutions produced are appropriate for the client and project requirements. Chris now manages the technical systems and training for 10 other engineers. \nHelen Trappitt\nHelen is a structural engineer\, director and shareholder at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers based in Christchurch. Since graduating from the University of Canterbury with BE(Hons) in 2000\, she has gone on to become a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the University of Canterbury Civil and Natural Resources Engineering department. Helen specialises in the seismic strengthening of heritage buildings and has experience in this sector both before and after the Canterbury earthquake sequence. This led to her appointment as a Director of Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Ltd in 2018. Recently Helen was awarded the Engineering New Zealand Canterbury Branch Award for Excellence in Service to the Community\, which recognised her pro bono work with Gap Filler\, CoCA\, FESTA\, SCAPE Public Art and promoting engineering careers in girls’ schools. \nScott Davies-Colley\nA design Engineer with Holmes Consulting in Christchurch\, Scott arrived at the University of Canterbury to start his engineering degree the week of the February 2011 Canterbury earthquake. The subsequent rebuild in Christchurch has formed a large part of his engineering career. With the immense extent of work required for the rebuild of a city\, Scott has had opportunities to work on a vast array of projects. These have included heritage URM buildings\, green field site projects such as Rolleston Secondary School and recently a new multi-storey low damage base isolated office building at 2 Cathedral Square. Access from Symonds or Princess Streets  \nAgenda – \n17:30 pre-presentation refreshments \n18:00 presentation \nPlease register for this presentation online using the following link:  \nThe Collapse of the Morandi Bridge:  Chronicle of a Death Foretold? \nAbstract \nOn 14 August 2018\, the Ponte Morandi\, part of the Polcevera Viaduct in Genoa\, Italy\, partially collapsed without warning killing 43 people. Despite starting to show signs of deterioration in the 1990s and a number of proposals to replace the bridge in the intervening years\, few initiatives were undertaken in a meaningful manner. \n  \nThe presentation explores the background and design philosophy of the designer Morandi\, overviews the construction and design of the Genoa bridge and highlights the possible causes of the collapse. The presentation concludes with some lessons learnt that could be relevant to New Zealand bridge infrastructure. \n  \nBiography \nAlessandro Palermo. Alessandro’s research areas of interest are mainly focused on structural bridge engineering\, where he is currently course coordinator of a post-graduate course. His expertise is particularly focused on implementation of seismic low-damage technologies for precast concrete bridges and buildings; His research varies from monitoring and seismic assessment of existing bridges to the use of novel materials such glass reinforcing and ultra-high performance concrete. \n  \nHe has always been passionate about history and aesthetics: he runs a very popular bridge building competition within the University of Canterbury undergraduate programme and supervises research projects on innovative pedestrian bridge design using novel materials\, technologies and 3D visualization. \n  \nWithin the last National earthquakes he has been heavily involved in reconnaissance of Canterbury and Kaikoura bridges and he is currently coordinating the Canterbury Bridge Group. Alessandro is author of more than 310 international conference/journal papers and 3 patents. He has been awarded the 2013 Ivan Skinner award for his recent advancements in earthquake engineering\, University of Canterbury Innovation Medal (2013) and 2016 Best Lecturer of the Year at the University of Canterbury.
