DESCRIPTION:This seminar provides guidance on the simplified lateral mechanism analysis (SLaMA) of existing buildings. The seminar aims to clarify the conceptual basis of how the approach can be used to assist in establishing the %NBS of a building. Two worked examples will be reviewed during the seminar\, making reference to relevant parts of the NZSEE detailed seismic assessment guidelines and a newly released set of guidelines for SLaMA. Prior to that he was based in Italy where he was head of the Design Methods Section of the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering\, and Assistant Professor at the University of Pavia. Tim’s research interests lie mainly in the examination of the fundamentals of seismic design and experimental testing techniques. He is particularly well recognised for his work in displacement-based seismic design and assessment methods\, with his PhD supervised by Nigel Priestley and Gian Michele Calvi. Tim has more than 100 publications related to seismic design\, seismic assessment\, seismic retrofit and mitigation of seismic risk. Tim is also a chartered professional engineer with the UK institute of Civil Engineers\, having worked in the UK\, New Zealand\, Germany and Italy on a wide range of building and bridge projects. \nBarry Davidson \nBarry has over thirty years’ experience in structural engineering\, design\, research and teaching. He has a wide-ranging background that includes the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete and unreinforced masonry buildings and the design of damping and isolation systems to mitigate vibrations for buildings\, stairways and bridges. He taught and lead research into seismic design at the University of Auckland for over twenty years\, while remaining in contact with the design profession through his company\, Compusoft Engineering Ltd. DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, 17 April 2019\nTime: Presentation 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm\, networking & refreshments to follow\nVenue: University of Canterbury – James Hight Library – Undercroft room 101 \nThe EPB Methodology is the engine room of the new earthquake prone buildings system which came into force on 1 July 2017. The EPB Methodology provides the framework and rules for how potentially earthquake prone buildings are identified\, the scope and form of engineering assessments\, and criteria for how territorial authorities review and accept engineering assessments and decide on whether or not buildings are earthquake prone. It is essential that engineers undertaking seismic assessments for earthquake prone purposes have a good understanding of the provisions of the EPB Methodology – in particular\, what their assessments need to address and how they report their assessments to TAs. \nDave Brunsdon\, engineering adviser to MBIE’s Building System Assurance team\, will present the key points of the EPB Methodology for engineering practitioners. This will be a condensed version of the MBIE system training seminar delivered in August 2017\, but will explore additional aspects such as the treatment of interconnected buildings and use of the Assessment Summary Table template.

Access from Symonds Street (Refer attached City Campus Map) \nAgenda – \n17:30 pre-presentation refreshments \n18:00 presentation \nPlease register to attend this presentation by sending a blank email and RSVP only in the subject box to aucklandstructuralgroup@xtra.co.nz \nAbstract \nAs the use of externally bonded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement (EBR) systems for the retrofit of existing concrete structures becomes more prevalent\, engineers and researchers are focusing on the use of FRP spike anchors to enhance the efficiency of EBR systems. This presentation focuses on the recent advances on the investigation of FRP anchors and describes how FRP anchors have been utilized in several field applications and the design of the anchors. The presentation offers a unique perspective that combines the academic and practicing engineering viewpoints. \nBiography \nScott Smith is Foundation Professor of Engineering and Dean of Engineering at Southern Cross University\, Australia\, and he has held these positions since 2013. His research interests encompass the application of advanced composite materials to civil infrastructure and he is Senior Vice President of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC). Scott is also an Editor for Construction and Building Materials and an Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Civil Engineering. He holds fellowships with the International Institute for FRP in Construction\, Engineers Australia\, American Society of Civil Engineers\, and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. \nRavi Kanitkar has more than twenty years of experience in the design of new structures and the retrofit of existing structures. His focus has been on the solution of unique problems for a variety of structures\, ranging from seismic retrofit of existing buildings and bridges to the rehabilitation of infrastructure\, such as large diameter pipes and tanks\, which has been degraded due to environmental damage like corrosion. His interests include new technologies such as energy-dissipation for improving structural seismic performance and carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) for strengthening existing structures. He is a voting member of the American Concrete Institute Committee 440 which writes the state-of-the-art design guides for the use of FRP in the United States. Ravi is a licensed engineer in several US states. Ravi has authored many publications dealing with the use of new technologies for rehabilitation of existing structures and has presented his work at conferences world-wide.

DESCRIPTION:This seminar provides guidance on the simplified lateral mechanism analysis (SLaMA) of existing buildings. The seminar aims to clarify the conceptual basis of how the approach can be used to assist in establishing the %NBS of a building. Two worked examples will be reviewed during the seminar\, making reference to relevant parts of the NZSEE detailed seismic assessment guidelines and a newly released set of guidelines for SLaMA. It is intended that practitioners inexperienced with the subject of seismic assessment will leave the seminar equipped with a better understanding of the SLaMA approach and valuable notes for later reference. \nDownload Registration form here\nSpeaker Profile\nTim Sullivan \nTim Sullivan is an Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury\, New Zealand. Prior to that he was based in Italy where he was head of the Design Methods Section of the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering\, and Assistant Professor at the University of Pavia. Tim’s research interests lie mainly in the examination of the fundamentals of seismic design and experimental testing techniques. He is particularly well recognised for his work in displacement-based seismic design and assessment methods\, with his PhD supervised by Nigel Priestley and Gian Michele Calvi. Tim has more than 100 publications related to seismic design\, seismic assessment\, seismic retrofit and mitigation of seismic risk. Tim is also a chartered professional engineer with the UK institute of Civil Engineers\, having worked in the UK\, New Zealand\, Germany and Italy on a wide range of building and bridge projects. \nBarry Davidson \nBarry has over thirty years’ experience in structural engineering\, design\, research and teaching. He has a wide-ranging background that includes the seismic retrofit of reinforced concrete and unreinforced masonry buildings and the design of damping and isolation systems to mitigate vibrations for buildings\, stairways and bridges. He taught and lead research into seismic design at the University of Auckland for over twenty years\, while remaining in contact with the design profession through his company\, Compusoft Engineering Ltd. DESCRIPTION:SESOC Emerging Structural Engineers Network invite you to the above presentation being delivered in Auckland in April. \nWednesday 3 April 2019\nUniversity of Auckland – Faculty of Science\, 302-G20\nNetworking from 5.30pm\, Presentation from 6pm followed by food and drinks \nPresented By Andrew Thompson – Technical Director at Holmes Consulting. \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will use a case example to showcase a range of interacting behaviours\, design considerations and staging issues in concrete component design – illustrating a few of the key skills expected of a competent design engineer in reinforced concrete design. \nThe case example used will be the design of a series of conventional (non post- tensioned) reinforced concrete transfer beams in the Commercial Bay development. The transfer beams span over the CRL tunnel\, and are used to support basement structure and columns from parts of both steel framed and concrete framed buildings above\, which form part of the low rise retail component of the development. Whilst the example chosen may be a seemingly innocuous part of a project which delivered numerous greater challenges elsewhere\, it is a convenient way to step through a few different aspects of reinforced concrete design. This includes: \n\nWhat are “deep beams”?\nConventional plane sections bending/shear theory\, versus strut and tie\nSeismic design actions (including SESOC guidance recommendations)\nComposite sections (for unpropped construction)\nCalculation of deflection\nConsideration of shrinkage and creep\nStaged construction considerations (and how these considerations differ in concrete and steel construction)\nPour sequencing and pour methodology for flatness and levelness\nManagement of sensitivity/uncertainty\nCrack control from applied loads\nEarly age and thermal cracking in concrete\nRoles and responsibilities in design and construction\, and communication\n\nOpportunities will be taken where possible to touch on some of the wider applications of the above considerations (beyond the case example)\, and the literature/methods available to tackle them. Chris started his career in Christchurch just after the Darfield 2010 earthquake and was fully involved in the assessment and remediation of damaged educational\, commercial and residential structures from the start of his career. He has since worked on a variety of structural projects\, working closely with architects\, developers\, local authorities\, and home owners. Chris has focused on ensuring that the solutions produced are appropriate for the client and project requirements. Chris now manages the technical systems and training for 10 other engineers. \nHelen Trappitt\nHelen is a structural engineer\, director and shareholder at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers based in Christchurch. Since graduating from the University of Canterbury with BE(Hons) in 2000\, she has gone on to become a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the University of Canterbury Civil and Natural Resources Engineering department. Helen specialises in the seismic strengthening of heritage buildings and has experience in this sector both before and after the Canterbury earthquake sequence. This led to her appointment as a Director of Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Ltd in 2018. Recently Helen was awarded the Engineering New Zealand Canterbury Branch Award for Excellence in Service to the Community\, which recognised her pro bono work with Gap Filler\, CoCA\, FESTA\, SCAPE Public Art and promoting engineering careers in girls’ schools. \nScott Davies-Colley\nA design Engineer with Holmes Consulting in Christchurch\, Scott arrived at the University of Canterbury to start his engineering degree the week of the February 2011 Canterbury earthquake. The subsequent rebuild in Christchurch has formed a large part of his engineering career. With the immense extent of work required for the rebuild of a city\, Scott has had opportunities to work on a vast array of projects. These have included heritage URM buildings\, green field site projects such as Rolleston Secondary School and recently a new multi-storey low damage base isolated office building at 2 Cathedral Square. Access from Symonds or Princess Streets  \nAgenda – \n17:30 pre-presentation refreshments \n18:00 presentation \nPlease register for this presentation online using the following link:  \nThe Collapse of the Morandi Bridge:  Chronicle of a Death Foretold? \nAbstract \nOn 14 August 2018\, the Ponte Morandi\, part of the Polcevera Viaduct in Genoa\, Italy\, partially collapsed without warning killing 43 people. Despite starting to show signs of deterioration in the 1990s and a number of proposals to replace the bridge in the intervening years\, few initiatives were undertaken in a meaningful manner. \n  \nThe presentation explores the background and design philosophy of the designer Morandi\, overviews the construction and design of the Genoa bridge and highlights the possible causes of the collapse. The presentation concludes with some lessons learnt that could be relevant to New Zealand bridge infrastructure. \n  \nBiography \nAlessandro Palermo. Alessandro’s research areas of interest are mainly focused on structural bridge engineering\, where he is currently course coordinator of a post-graduate course. His expertise is particularly focused on implementation of seismic low-damage technologies for precast concrete bridges and buildings; His research varies from monitoring and seismic assessment of existing bridges to the use of novel materials such glass reinforcing and ultra-high performance concrete. \n  \nHe has always been passionate about history and aesthetics: he runs a very popular bridge building competition within the University of Canterbury undergraduate programme and supervises research projects on innovative pedestrian bridge design using novel materials\, technologies and 3D visualization. \n  \nWithin the last National earthquakes he has been heavily involved in reconnaissance of Canterbury and Kaikoura bridges and he is currently coordinating the Canterbury Bridge Group. Alessandro is author of more than 310 international conference/journal papers and 3 patents. He has been awarded the 2013 Ivan Skinner award for his recent advancements in earthquake engineering\, University of Canterbury Innovation Medal (2013) and 2016 Best Lecturer of the Year at the University of Canterbury.

SUMMARY:Prof. Jack Moehle - Performance-Based Seismic Design of Tall Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Performance-Based Seismic Design of Tall Buildings\nProf. Jack Moehle \nEd and Diane Wilson Presidential Professor of Structural Engineering\, University of California\, Berkeley \nAbstract\nWe live in a time when social\, environmental\, and economic factors in the Western United States favour the development of urban centres populated by high-rise buildings. The design of this new generation of high-rise buildings has benefited from the advancement of performance-based design methods in which structural engineers characterize expected performance for hypothesized earthquake shaking using computer simulation. The design approach has evolved rapidly – whereas a decade ago each project had its own\, project-specific basis\, today the designs are guided by a set of consensus standards. The seminar will describe the performance-based design approach and will illustrate it through the example of a tall building design in San Francisco. \nBiography\nJack Moehle received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and joined the U.C. Berkeley faculty in 1980. From 1991 to 2001 he was Director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Center at Berkeley\, and in 1996 he became founding Director of the multi-university Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center\, where he served until 2008. He has played a leading role in the development of building codes and professional engineering guidelines for the design of new construction and the assessment and rehabilitation of seismically vulnerable existing construction\, including Guidelines for Evaluation and Repair of Masonry and Concrete Walls (FEMA 306); Guidelines for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings (FEMA 273 and ASCE 41); Development of Next-Generation Performance-Based Seismic Design Procedures for New and Existing Buildings (FEMA P-58); and Guidelines for Performance-Based Seismic Design of Tall Buildings (Tall Buildings Initiative\, PEER). He has been a member of the ACI 318 Building Code Committee since 1989\, Chair of the Seismic Provisions subcommittee from 1995-2014\, and currently serves as the ACI 318 Chair. He is also author of the textbook Seismic Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings published by McGraw-Hill.

Despite starting to show signs of deterioration in the 1990s and a number of proposals to replace the bridge in the intervening years\, few initiatives were undertaken in a meaningful manner. \nThe presentation explores the background and design philosophy of the designer Morandi\, overviews the construction and design of the Genoa bridge and highlights the possible causes of the collapse. The presentation concludes with some lessons learnt that could be relevant to New Zealand bridge infrastructure.

There is considerable uncertainty over the likely outcome of Brexit\, concern at the underlying causes of the recent collapse of the construction company Carillion\, and ramifications from the inquiry into the Grenfell tower block disaster. At the same time\, the UK government has recognised the very significant economic benefits that could be generated by improving the productivity and performance of the construction sector. As a result\, the government has announced a new “Transforming Construction” initiative which commits £170M of government funding\, matched by £250M from industry\, to create new construction processes and techniques. Much of this funding will focus on the development of offsite manufacturing\, digital engineering and improving productivity and skills. This presentation will give an overview of these recent developments and look in more detail at the opportunities. \nBiography \nProfessor Campbell Middleton \nLaing O’Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering & Technology\, Department of Engineering\, Cambridge University \nProfessor Campbell Middleton is the Director of the Laing O’Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering & Technology in the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University. Prior to Cambridge\, he worked for nearly 10 years in professional practice in infrastructure design and construction in Australia and with Arup in London. He is Chairman of the UK Bridge Owners Forum\, a member of the Design Panel for High Speed 2\, and has acted as an advisor or consultant to a number of organisations including Infrastructure UK\, the Highways Agency and the National Transport Commission in Australia. He has been awarded a number of academic awards including the Henry Adams Award of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 1999 & 2014\, and the Telford Premium Award (1999) and Telford Gold Medal (2010) from the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers\, the Institution of Engineers\, Australia and the Transport Research Foundation. His research interests include advanced plastic analysis\, risk & asset management\, non-destructive testing\, modular and additive manufacturing\, applications of computer vision & smart sensor applications for structural health monitoring. He is a member of the executive team responsible for overseeing the EPSRC/Innovate UK funded Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction.
