Each engineer will have 5-10 minutes to give a brief insight into a project they are working on followed by some open Q+A and a chance to share experiences. \nOur presenters for this event will include: \nDylan Proudfoot – Mass Timber Project\n\n\n\n\nDylan is a structural engineer at Beca who has been working on adopting CLT floors as an alternative to metal deck concrete flooring on the Burnham Single Living Accommodation. With a key design criteria of sustainability in the forefront of our minds\, mass timber has become a prominent design material. Dylan will discuss the design challenges and lessons learnt from this project\, with an emphasis on steel/timber hybrid structures.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nDuncan Ross – Eco-house\n\n\n\n\nDuncan is a graduate structural engineer at Pocket Engineering and will be sharing his experience designing a new eco-house in Havelock North. The architectural detailing to achieve the desired air tightness and thermal performance required careful and sensitive engineering design and coordination. This coupled with the high seismic demands and sloping site led to some challenging engineering solutions. \n \n\n\nLuis John – Strengthening of Carillon Tower\n\n\n\nLuis is a structural engineer at Holmes who will be sharing some of his recent work producing an assessment and concept strengthening schemes for Carillon Tower in Wellington. He will share a brief history of the function of the tower\, some of the assessment techniques implemented\, and the challenges faced.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nRichard Dyer – Backcountry Engineering at DOC\n\n\n\nRichard is a structural engineer at the Department of Conservation. He will be talking about the challenges with remote construction in some of New Zealand’s harshest environments and touch on some of the work carried out by DOC engineers around New Zealand to manage the vast number of aging backcountry structures.\n\n\n  \n  \n

Each engineer will have 5-10 minutes to give a brief insight into a project they are working on followed by some open Q+A and a chance to share experiences. \nOur presenters for this event will include: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHayden Clarke – Antarctica Wind Farm Foundations \n \n \nHayden will be presenting on his experience with the concept design for the replacement Antarctica Ross Island windfarm foundations. Design of structures in Antarctica poses many unique challenges and logistical constraints. Hayden will be briefly talking to us about a selection of these that he dealt with during the design of the steel octo-pod like foundations.\n\n\nAgata Skoneczna – Parametric Modelling\n\n\n\nAgata is a structural engineer at Beca. She has gained parametric modelling knowledge while working in Europe and since she joined Beca last year\, she has worked on projects utilizing parametric modelling to aid with structural design as well as verification.  She will share her experience on using this tool.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBen Hawken – Netball and Futsal Arena\nBen is a graduate structural engineer at GHD and will be presenting on his experience in the design of a new 130 m x 80 m 10 court netball and futsal arena in Christchurch. The accelerated design program brought many challenges and intricacies which he will share with you.\n\n\n\n \n\n\nAlex Scott – Prefabricated Timber in Residential Structures \n\nAlex is a structural engineer at ENGCO Consulting Engineers who has gained experience in modular timber design whilst working with Hector Egger New Zealand. He will be talking about the use of prefabricated timber panels in residential structures. Particularly focusing on the challenges and benefits involved in the design and construction process\, and lessons learnt through a range of projects.\n\n\n\n \n\n\nJake Mayston – Christ Church Cathedral Stabilisation\nJake is a graduate engineer at Holmes who has been involved with many aspects of the iconic Christ Church Cathedral project. He will be presenting on the Stabilisation phase following the recent milestone on site of entering the building. He will share examples from construction monitoring of how the project team adapted to site conditions – a common theme when working with existing and particularly heritage structures.\n\n\n\n  \nAfter the presentations there will be time for questions and discussion\, followed by food and drink. \nThese events will be held regularly throughout the year to give all of our ESE members the chance to share what they are working on. DESCRIPTION:Join our SESOC President Michelle Grand and her co-speaker Gordon Hughes as they present the 10 Tips for Better Designs of Low-Rise Structures (aka Low-Rise Learnings) \nThe seminar will provide ten tips for the better design of low- rise structures\, with a focus on commercial buildings. \nLow- rise structures are one of the most common types of designed buildings in New Zealand.  There have been multiple recent cases of structural designs not meeting requirements. \nThis seminar aims to provide practical tips to structural engineers operating in this space. \nAt the end of the seminar\, there will be a SESOC Presidents reception\, where attendees can join us for drinks and a catch-up. \nThis seminar will be from 1:00pm – 5:00 pm (registration starts at 12:30pm)\nA light refreshment for afternoon tea will be served. Food and drinks will be offered during the President’s reception between 5:00 – 6:00 pm \nThis seminar is being offered at a reduced rate for SESOC members to encourage as many members as possible who work in this space to attend\, particularly emerging engineers\, those operating in smaller practices\, or larger firms able to send more staff.  It is also conducted by the SESOC President in lieu of a president’s roadshow. \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:Emerging Structural Engineers Network – Lightning Talks \nSESOC ESE are continuing a popular series of events – Lightning Talks. These events are a chance for our emerging engineers to share the projects they are working on\, and open some discussion around challenges and lessons learned. \nTuesday 13 September\nBECA Auditorium\, 21 Pitt Street\, Auckland\n5.30pm networking and drinks for 6pm start\nRegister here \nThis event features five of our emerging structural engineers. Each engineer will have 5-10 minutes to five a brief insight into a project they are working on – whether that be a technical challenge\, design overview\, construction monitoring\, or project management. \nOur presenters for this kick-off event will include:\n\n\n\nMichael Robinson – South Pacific Games Village in PNG\, A Structural Modelling Lesson to Remember \nMichael is a chartered structural engineer and Technical Director at Beca and has over 20 years’ experience of working in Asia Pacific regions. He will be giving a brief overview of the Athletes Village project completed for the South Pacific Games held in Port Moresby\, PNG in 2015. This includes a reminder of a key structural lesson we all need to remember in design.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nWenlong Yuan – Survival in Engineering \nWenlong is a senior structural engineer working at Mott Macdonald. With 6 years of previous experience with large projects on our shores and overseas\, he has been through his fair share of learnings along the way. Wenlong will share some things that he believes are vital in surviving your early years in engineering.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nLibby Porter – The University of Auckland’s Recreation and Wellness Centre \nLibby is a structural engineer with Beca and is based in the Auckland Building Structures team. Libby joined Beca in 2019 as a graduate engineer\, and has been involved in both the design and construction monitoring stages of the redevelopment of the Human Sciences Building\, and also the new Recreation and Wellness Centre at the University of Auckland. She is going to share her experiences working on the Recreation and Wellness Centre\, and some lessons she has learnt along the way.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nHa Phong – First ‘debut’ project: what I wish I knew  \nHa has been working as a structural engineer for the past 3.5 years. In this time\, he has had the opportunity to run some projects in the residential\, commercial and infrastructure space. Ha will share his experiences and some things that he wish he knew when he first ran a project.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nTom Paul – Site Testing of Drill & Epoxy Anchors  \nTom has worked in a variety of different areas since graduating. With Mitchell Vranjes\, he has recently played a roll in overseeing the testing of drill and epoxy anchors. He will share some of the challenges of that he has encountered and some things designers should know about how the anchor work on site.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAfter the presentations there will be time for questions and discussion\, followed by food and drink. \nThese events will be held regularly throughout the year to give all of our ESE members the chance to share what they are working on.
