DESCRIPTION:Upcoming event\nWellbeing and Diversity in Engineering \nSESOC Emerging Structural Engineers are excited to host a webinar on Wellbeing and Diversity in Engineering. These are two big themes that impact everyone in different ways as part of their day-to-day life as an engineer. \nWellbeing has been at the forefront in recent times with the added pressures that Covid 19 has introduced. But wellbeing is not a new idea in a deadline focused industry like engineering. Gloria Wang and Michael Geddes will share their experiences as graduate engineers\, and some of the challenges they each faced with different aspects of their wellbeing. \nDiversity has also been a big focal point of the engineering industry as a whole\, with initiatives like the Diversity Agenda engaging with companies to commit to accountability and action in this space. Not loud enough\, not productive enough\, not staying late enough\, not contributing enough. I was inexperienced\, I lacked confidence\, and I doubted my ability to fit in and be accepted in the workplace. It took me two years to realise the problem wasn’t me\, I just didn’t know how to deal with the environment I was in. We’ve all had times when we just wanted to fit it\, and in the process we lose sight of authenticity. Come and listen to how my experience as a graduate influenced my sense of belonging in the workplace.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nHi everyone! I’m Gloria\, a Systems Engineer at Beca. I graduated from The University of Auckland in Chemical and Materials Engineering and started my career as a Process engineer but now work in the National Defence and Security sector. What I enjoy most about work is that we are always solving new and complex problems with people from all different backgrounds. In my spare time\, I love baking for friends\, playing tennis and binging crime dramas on Netflix.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\nMichael Geddes\nOur profession\, I think you will agree\, is a meaningful and rewarding one. It is also at times challenging and demands accountability. Naturally then\, we could expect our mental health/wellbeing to be tested at various times during our careers. Graduate engineers may be  especially vulnerable to stresses as they begin to navigate the world of consulting: project deadlines\, staffing shortfalls\, challenging team dynamics and the like.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nIt is heartening to see growing awareness of mental health/ wellbeing in our industry. The aim of this paper is to stimulate further conversation in this area. Michael is a structural engineer at WSP New Zealand with 7 years of experience. Michael first presented on “mental health in the engineering profession” at the 2021 SESOC Conference. This latest presentation will cover observations on health and wellbeing in the engineering sector\, his personal experiences in a consultancy and some tips and tricks to manage wellbeing.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n \nCharlotte Toma and Max Stephens\nWomen continue to be underrepresented in the engineering industry; however\, in New Zealand\, the key factors contributing to this disparity have not been analysed. This study investigated the factors that affect gender imbalance in the New Zealand engineering workforce. Barriers inhibiting and initiatives positively influencing the career progression of men and women were identified. Analysis of the results identify women are often subject to serious discrimination and stereotyping. The researchers also determined factors which would help improve gender diversity within the engineering industry in New Zealand.Charlotte Toma and Max Stephens are lecturers of Structural Engineering at the University of Auckland. This research was completed by Hannah Davidson and Lucy Devonshire in 2020. The presentation will discuss some key findings and also introduce the work underway to enact change in the Industry.

He is responsible for driving change within the profession\, setting the minimum sustainability standards for institution members\, producing sustainability publications and training to support this\, and collaborating across the wider industry as it moves towards zero emissions. Previous to his work with the institution\, Will was a practising structural engineer at Arup for 10 years where he was responsible for key aspects of ambitious architectural projects across the world. \n  \nWill is chair of the Construction Industry Council’s 2050 Group\, and an active member of The Edge thinktank\, the UK Built Environment Advisory Group\, and the Engineering Advisory Group for The Structural Engineer magazine. He also sits on the judging panel for The Structural Awards. In 2021\, Will was presented with the President’s Award by the Institution\, in recognition of his work instigating change in the field of structural sustainability.\n\n\n\nEmbodied Carbon in Structural Design   \nNick Carman – Mott MacDonald NZ \n Based on some recent experiences and projects quantifying embodied carbon for buildings in Aotearoa-New Zealand\, the purpose of this presentation is to discuss the motivation behind studying embodied carbon\, fundamentals of LCA for buildings and typical results from recent studies\, from the viewpoint of an engineer entering into the world of LCA. \nA few key areas of uncertainty are discussed\, such as appropriate steelwork embodied carbon factors (ECFs)\, comparison between as-designed and as-constructed measures\, and whether the use of timber to decarbonise a project is a silver bullet. \n  \nNick Carman is a Technical Director within the Built Environment sector at Mott MacDonald\, with a strong focus on sustainability and  low-carbon design brought about by collaboration.  He has worked on projects throughout Australasia\, the UK\, the Middle-East and Canada\, but his favourite work remains that in his home of New Zealand.\n\n\n\nChallenges and Possible Solutions for Structural Engineers Seeking to Make a Positive Contributions to the Climate Emergency \nJared Keen – BECA \nAs the construction industry\, and the society within which we operate\, seeks mitigations to our present climate emergency\, structural engineers are seeking ways to transform from part of the problem\, to part of the solution.  In this presentation\, Jared examines the barriers that face practicing engineers in the meaningful implementation of low-carbon structures\, and how those barriers might be hurdled\, either by individual design teams\, or by the industry at large. \n  \nJared Keen is a Technical Director at Beca.  As a practicing structural engineer he has delivered major projects throughout New Zealand\, the United Kingdom and Europe.  He is the current IStructE New Zealand branch chair\, and an industry affiliate for QuakeCore.  He has a particular interest in sustainability and low damaged design and has delivered multiple timber projects in New Zealand\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:SESOC is pleased to invite you to attend Helen Trappitt’s presentation\, The Aftermath of Disaster in Christchurch – Repairing\, strengthening and creating new hope. \nTuesday 1st June 6pm: Beca Christchurch \nRegister HERE \nHelen originally shared this presentation as keynote speaker at the virtual ASEC conference last year\, and to an audience in Christchurch in March this year as part of the Engineering New Zealand Ten Years On Commemorations. \nHer abstract poses the argument that the most sustainable building is one that is able to be restored and repaired following a disaster. After the Canterbury earthquake sequence of 2010-11 many buildings in the Christchurch CBD were demolished\, often unnecessarily. The presentation will focus on the reinstatement of five buildings in Christchurch CBD (complete or ongoing) which cover a broad range of structural forms and construction. Ultimately almost 80% of the built environment in the city centre was lost. But there were many other ways that structural engineers brought life back to the city. Helen will also share her experience in the development of several large scale public artworks\, which helped to draw people back into the city centre once again. \nSESOC member Helen Trappitt is a structural engineer\, director and shareholder at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers based in Christchurch. She is on the Industry Advisory Board for the University of Canterbury Civil and Natural Resources Engineering department\, where she graduated with First Class Honours in 2000. Helen is a Director of Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited\, the joint venture company tasked with reinstating the city’s most significant icon. \nHelen specialises in the seismic strengthening of heritage buildings and has experience in this sector both before and after the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence.  She is also well respected for her expertise in helping to resolve complex residential insurance claims. \nHelen was awarded the Engineering New Zealand Canterbury Branch Award for Excellence in Service to the Community in 2018 for her pro bono work helping Gap Filler\, CoCA\, FESTA and SCAPE Public Art; and for her efforts in promoting engineering as a career at girls’ schools.  In 2019 Lewis Bradford was awarded two inaugural Engineering New Zealand ENVI awards for projects Helen steered. \nLewis Bradford has been responsible for the successful structural repair and strengthening of numerous important buildings in Christchurch. They were internationally recognised in 2019 with the IStructE award for structures in extreme conditions for the design of the new central library Turanga. \nIn a year when we remember the events in Christchurch ten years ago\, Helen’s presentation provides technical information on the strengthening and repair of heritage buildings\, the design of new buildings and large-scale public artworks\, mixed with the reality of experiencing the violence of the earthquakes and the extraordinary circumstances of working as an engineer in a devastated city as it continued to be subject to aftershocks.

DESCRIPTION:SESOC is pleased to invite you to attend Helen Trappitt’s presentation\, The Aftermath of Disaster in Christchurch – Repairing\, strengthening and creating new hope. \nTuesday 18th May 6pm: University of Auckland – Faculty of Engineering\, 1.401 \n  \nHelen originally shared this presentation as keynote speaker at the virtual ASEC conference last year\, and to an audience in Christchurch in March this year as part of the Engineering New Zealand Ten Years On Commemorations. \nHer abstract poses the argument that the most sustainable building is one that is able to be restored and repaired following a disaster. After the Canterbury earthquake sequence of 2010-11 many buildings in the Christchurch CBD were demolished\, often unnecessarily. The presentation will focus on the reinstatement of five buildings in Christchurch CBD (complete or ongoing) which cover a broad range of structural forms and construction. Ultimately almost 80% of the built environment in the city centre was lost. But there were many other ways that structural engineers brought life back to the city. Helen will also share her experience in the development of several large scale public artworks\, which helped to draw people back into the city centre once again. \nSESOC member Helen Trappitt is a structural engineer\, director and shareholder at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers based in Christchurch. She is on the Industry Advisory Board for the University of Canterbury Civil and Natural Resources Engineering department\, where she graduated with First Class Honours in 2000. Helen is a Director of Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited\, the joint venture company tasked with reinstating the city’s most significant icon. \nHelen specialises in the seismic strengthening of heritage buildings and has experience in this sector both before and after the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence.  She is also well respected for her expertise in helping to resolve complex residential insurance claims. \nHelen was awarded the Engineering New Zealand Canterbury Branch Award for Excellence in Service to the Community in 2018 for her pro bono work helping Gap Filler\, CoCA\, FESTA and SCAPE Public Art; and for her efforts in promoting engineering as a career at girls’ schools.  In 2019 Lewis Bradford was awarded two inaugural Engineering New Zealand ENVI awards for projects Helen steered. \nLewis Bradford has been responsible for the successful structural repair and strengthening of numerous important buildings in Christchurch. These events will be a chance for our emerging engineers to share the projects they are working on\, and open some discussion around challenges and lessons learned. \nThursday 13 May\nAurecon\, Level 1 Iwikau Building\, 93 Cambridge Terrace\, Christchurch\n5.30pm networking and drinks for 6pm start \nThe Christchurch launch will be held on the 13th May and features five of our emerging structural engineers. Each engineer will have 5-10 minutes to give a brief insight into a project they are working on – whether that be a technical challenge\, design overview\, construction monitoring\, or project management. \nOur presenters for this kick-off event will include: \nJoshua Cornish – Construction Monitoring at Linwood College\nJoshua is a structural engineer who has worked at Aurecon since graduating in 2017. His recent project experience with the redevelopment of Linwood College\, in particular the Construction Monitoring phase of 4 new classroom blocks\, will be the basis for his presentation. He will share some of the challenges and lessons learned as part of this process. \nSophie Woodhams – CDHB Energy Centre\nSophie is a graduate engineer with Holmes Consulting\, and has worked on a wide range of commercial structures. She is going to share her project experience on the CDHB Energy Centre\, looking at the coordination challenges the design team faced\, and the benefits and pitfalls of BIM. \nEdbert Livia – Designing a sculpture? How?\nEdbert is a structural engineer with Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers. Born in Indonesia\, he moved to New Zealand in 2015 to study Civil Engineering. Edbert will share some of the unique design challenges when it comes to sculptural design. \nBen Exton – Temporary Works Lessons\nBen is a structural engineer who has worked for both Structex and Building Revolutions in Christchurch since graduating in 2016. He has continued study in Earthquake Engineering since\, and has a keen interest in innovation in this field. Temporary works design and construction requires a combination of clear communication and risk awareness. Ben will cover some key lessons learnt in some recent temporary works projects\, including the repair of the New Brighton Pier. \nWilliam Southby – Managing a Portfolio\nWilliam has worked at Calibre Consulting since graduating in 2016. His latest project\, managing the Totalspan Portfolio\, involves managing a team of 15 engineers across the country to provide design services to the Totalspan Franchises across the country. This protection needs to be undertaken to the appropriate level of quality to meet the Building Code durability requirements. \nThis seminar will first highlight the requirements of the Clause B2 – Durability\, followed by an overview of the steel durability technical specification SNZ TS 3404\, durability of some other metals used in structural design\, the durability part of the concrete and masonry standards and durability requirements for the timber standard NZS 3604. The second of these presentations in Auckland will be by Bruce Curtain\, Head of Architecture at WSP on ‘the relationship between the architect and the engineer’. \nIn this presentation Bruce will present a case study – City Hall\, the iconic headquarters for the Mayor of London and Greater London Authority. Designed by Foster + Partners and Arup the combined team utilised leading edge design and construction techniques that integrate architecture\, structure and services to create a truly unique building. His prior experience includes many weekends spent working in the Christchurch Red Zone\, undertaking post-earthquake damage inspection\, site pre-pours\, and nine years of shallow-soils geotechnical testing experience.\nMichael’s paper is on the topic of Proactive Decision Making as a Graduate Engineer \nCharlotte Corston – Charlotte has worked as a structural engineer at BMC since graduating in 2016. During her time at BMC she has undertaken many earthquake assessments and new builds\, and is particularly passionate about heritage engineering.\nCharlotte’s paper uses the case study of the strengthening of the former Chief Post Office Building in Christchurch’s Cathedral Square to look at the workings of a project team. \nBen Westeneng – Ben is a structural engineer with three years of experience in structural design and seismic assessment in New Zealand. He also has a Master of Earthquake Engineering which investigated the buckling of gusset plates in BRB frames. His paper looked at the automation of seismic assessment of unreinforced masonry buildings. Ben won the SESOC ESE scholarship with this paper\, and attended the SEAOC Conference in California to present the paper there. \n  \n  \n \nKeynote presenter John Hare \nJohn Hare is a structural engineer and Chief Executive of Holmes Group\, with experience working in NZ\, the UK and the US. He is a Fellow of Engineering New Zealand and NZSEE\, and a life member and past president of SESOC. John sits on a number of advisory groups\, including the steering group for the Assessment Guidelines. \nThroughout his career\, John has had extensive experience in both the design of new structures and in the assessment and strengthening of existing buildings. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake\, he was seconded as Principal Engineering Adviser\, firstly to Civil Defence and subsequently to the Canterbury Earthquakes Recovery Authority. \n  \nJohn’s keynote address was on the theme of Challenging our views of Seismic Risk\, and whether our established practices are still fit for purpose. \nAt the SESOC Conference this year he was awarded the SESOC President’s Award for his outstanding contribution to the New Zealand Structural Engineering profession.

Alex obtained a BEng Hons degree in Aerospace Engineering but transitioned into Structures with his first ‘proper’ job for a small structural civil consultancy in the UK. After five years Alex moved to AECOM UK and quickly gained experience in a diverse range of projects\, sectors and contractual arrangements. During his time in the UK\, Alex had significant roles in delivering projects in both traditional and modular forms of construction for the Ministry of Defence\, refurbishment of grade listed historical buildings\, design optioneering for Clapham Junction train station upgrade and design of airside ancillary buildings at Heathrow airport to name a few select projects. In 2016 Alex moved to Hamilton and as team lead has been responsible for both the management and technical delivery of projects in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region. \n  \nDaniel Moore – Daniel joined Holmes Consulting in 2011\, making the move south to Hamilton from Auckland to become the Hamilton office Business Manager. Daniel has 10 years of design experience and 15 years in the industry. His project experience has included bulk retail\, industrial developments and retail complexes. Daniel enjoys building lasting relationships with clients and members of the design team during a project and sharing in the reward of a successful project. On many of his projects\, Daniel and his team have been the Lead Consultant responsible for developing the overall building and site layout and developing the architectural\, structural and civil components. Through his role as Lead Consultant (and Engineer to Contract) he has developed an extensive understanding of how buildings go together and the significant ongoing influence they can have on the businesses and communities they support. \n  \nJohn Warrington – John is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with WSP Opus\, based in their Hamilton Office\, and holds both CPEng and CEng registrations with Engineering New Zealand and the Institution of Civil Engineers in the UK. John has experience across a broad range of Civil Engineering disciplines having been involved in the design of cooling water systems for power stations\, geotechnical feasibility studies for nuclear and gas fired power stations\, design of small-scale hydro-electric schemes and the management of geotechnical input to light rail projects amongst others. John has worked for both consultancies and client organisations and as a result has developed a good understanding of the requirement for strong and open relationships between all parties involved in order to ensure the successful delivery of projects. He has spent a lot of time on construction sites\, which are fertile grounds for hard lessons. He also worked in Christchurch during and after the earthquakes\, which has shaped his approach to structural engineering \n  \nEvelyn Guiguet \nEvelyn is originally from Argentina where she completed her degree in Civil/Structural Engineering. Evelyn came to New Zealand in 2015 and worked in Canterbury until she joined Calibre in 2018. She particularly enjoys seismic engineering but likes to have a variety of projects on the go including bridge design. Evelyn recently had the chance to work on the Sea to Shore Tokelau wharf project. \n  \nIan Walsh \nIan has over 40 years of infrastructure sector experience with civil and hydraulic structures. His early MWD experience in bridge design then to irrigation development resulted in his first dam using concrete faced rockfill construction at Loganburn. Subsequent investigation roles for major Hydro Electric Development Proposals reinforced this interest and eventually led to further studies in Geotechnical and Dam Engineering in Australia and a short period getting up to speed with advances in constitutive modelling at Imperial College London. Ian’s design and peer review interests in recent years has focussed upon dam safety management and renewable energy developments involving Hydropower and Wind Energy. Ian is also active on major transportation projects promoting and advising on risk management and undertaking Engineer to Contract roles. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:SESOC is excited to announce the Wellington launch of the Emerging Structural Engineers Network. \nThis follows successful launch events held in Auckland and Christchurch. \nTuesday 14 May 2019\nOpus Presentation Room – Level 10\, Majestic Centre\, 100 Willis St\, Wellington \nThere will be an opportunity for networking with pizza and drinks from 5.30pm\, the presentations will start at 6pm.  \nWe’re fortunate to have four leaders in the structural engineering industry sharing on “things I learnt the hard way”. Whether it be technical challenges in design or construction projects\, building relationships with clients and colleagues or the development of professional skills\, the transition from university student to professional engineer can be tough – come and learn from the experiences of those that have been there. \nOur four panellists are: \nAnna Philpot \nAnna graduated from Canterbury University with a BE(Hons) in 2010 and started work at Holmes Consulting in Wellington two weeks before the February earthquake in Christchurch. While a large part of the New Zealand structural engineering sector focused on the Christchurch aftermath and rebuild\, Wellington building owners and tenants initiated a more urgent and focused review of the seismic performance of their properties. This lead to opportunities for Anna to work on several interesting and challenging projects including The Majestic Centre\, Wellington Railway Station\, Wellington Museum and Wellington Town Hall. The challenges presented by these projects often required unique approaches and solutions and were fantastic for developing Anna’s engineering fundamentals and problem solving skills. \nSteve Kemp\nSteve is a Technical Director with Beca\, focussing on buildings and more recently airport terminal buildings.  Steve spent his early career in the UK working in both private and public sectors.  In 2007\, he moved to New Zealand to take a position with Beca as a senior structural engineer.  Projects included a variety of sectors such as power generation\, schools and rail. Steve returned to the UK briefly to lead a structural engineering regional office and was responsible for finding and winning work as well as delivering it.  Returning to New Zealand in 2014\, Steve has led a number of projects\, most with an aviation focus\, such as the terminal south extension project at Wellington Airport. \nSusan Temple\nSusan graduated from Bradford University in the UK with MEng\, and worked for a small consultant Engineering firm before making the switch to main contracting. For the following 4 years\, she was the Structural Engineer for their in-house design department\, before coming to New Zealand in 2005. Susan is an integral part of the on-site and pre-construction team at Hawkins where she carries out all temporary works designs and reviews\, develops and manages construction programmes and methodologies\, carries out coordination reviews to pre-empt site problems\, and ensures structural and civil QA processes are implemented and controlled. Susan’s roles at Hawkins have included Temp Works Engineer for the Supreme Court\, (Construction) Project Manager in Vanuatu\, and now Senior Engineer. She has recently undertaken a series of nationwide presentations with SARNZ\, WorkSafe and the TWf regarding scaffold design and installation. \nPaul Campbell\nPaul is a Technical Leader for WSP Opus\, and a Past-President and life member of the Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand (SESOC). Paul is passionate about structural engineering and believes that we need strong advocacy and leadership in the profession. His focus is giving structural engineers the tools and support they need to practice their profession.  After the Canterbury Earthquake sequence of 2010 and 2011 Paul held various technical and leadership roles seconded within Christchurch City Council\, Civil Defence and the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA). Subsequent to the earthquakes he has given evidence at the Canterbury Earthquake Royal Commission\, put submissions to the New Zealand Government on Earthquake legislative matters and spent time working on improving the resilience and preparedness of New Zealand to respond to the next big event.  \nThe event is free but registration is essential\, Please RSVP below by Friday 10 May.

DESCRIPTION:New Zealand Tunnelling Society (NZTS) are hosting the above presentation that may be of interest to you. \nPresented by Rafael Sierra Ballen\, KiwiRail. \nThursday\, 2 May 2019\nThe University of Auckland Engineering Campus\, Lecture Threatre 401.139 \nFrom a standing start\, following the largest ever recorded earthquake in New Zealand\, a highly committed collaborative team\, assessed the damage across twenty tunnels\, designed the repairs in view of future resilience\, and built a construction capability that delivered the works safely and on budget. Works trains were running again within 7 months\, and commercial services within 10 months. In doing so\, we reconnected communities at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. \nRafa will describe the logistical and technical challenges of refurbishing the rail tunnels in the context of the natural terrain hazards and landslides informed by his experiences of driving the quality and safety outcomes achieved. \nRafael Sierra Ballen has worked as a construction manager for over thirty years in South America\, the Middle East\, Asia\, Australia and New Zealand for major civil engineering projects as a tunnel design manager and a tunnel construction manager. \nThere will be an opportunity for refreshments and networking from 5.30pm\, with the presentation starting at 6pm.
