The concrete industry associations are looking at whether any of the New Zealand Standards related to concrete masonry require revision.

This includes NZS 4230 Design of reinforced concrete masonry structures, which was last revised in 2004 and amended in 2006.

Could anyone who has encountered issues using this Standard or thinks aspects of it could be improved please let us know by response here.

There was one issue I remember that steel ratio may exceed the concrete block capacity and concrete will crushes first, by means over a reinforced failure.

Nic

one issue always outstanding with NZS4230 is location of control joints.  NZS 4229 is relatively prescriptive on this, but from what I read of NZS4230, it infers ‘up to engineering judgement’.  That’s probably a good flexible outcome, but there seems to be a broad disparity between the 2 standards

cheers
